Day Room Support Specialist

Position Summary

The Day Room Support Specialist is a vital member of the Veteran Resource Center (VRC), a program of Family Support Services. This position ensures that the Day Room is welcoming, accessible, and fully supported during business hours. The specialist will engage directly with veterans and their families, provide peer support, assist with resource navigation, and maintain a safe, hospitable environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as the main point of contact in the navigation center/day room during operating hours, fostering a welcoming and supportive environment for veterans and their families.


• Welcome and engage visitors, offering peer support and guiding them to the appropriate resources or members of the navigation team.


• Create an environment that encourages positive peer support, allowing veterans to connect and share their lived experiences with one another.


• Facilitate weekly Peer Support Groups with veteran clients.


• Develop and facilitate weekly groups which assist veterans with various needs and skills, such as budgeting, hygiene, job skills, or other needs identified by VRC staff.


• Maintain knowledge of local and regional resources available to veterans and their families, covering housing, mental health services, employment opportunities, and other support programs.


• Work closely with the navigation team to ensure smooth service delivery, including coordinating with staff who are in sessions or off-site.


• Help manage donations by accepting, organizing, and distributing items as necessary (requires ability to lift up to 25 lbs).


• Oversee the day room to maintain a clean, safe, and functional environment for clients and visitors.


• Support data collection and documentation to aid in program reporting and evaluation.


• Help develop and implement program initiatives and events aimed at supporting veterans and their families.


• Perform other related duties as assigned to support the Veteran Resource Center's mission.

Preferred Qualifications

• Veteran status or demonstrated connection to military service through shared lived experience.


• Excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to quickly build trust-based relationships.


• Understanding of human behavior and performance, including individual differences in abilities, personality, interests, learning, motivation, and psychological needs.


• Foster an inclusive and welcoming environment that embraces people of all backgrounds and experiences.


• Be a proactive, self-motivated individual with the ability to work independently and juggle multiple tasks efficiently.


• Have the ability to be teachable in the different skills the job requires.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience working in peer support or navigation services.


• Background in social services or community engagement, particularly with underserved populations.


• Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles.


• Organizational skills to manage the day room and coordinate resources effectively.

Education:

• A high school diploma or GED equivalency is required.


• Some college is preferred.
