Dean of College
The Dean of College and Post-Secondary Success is responsible for managing the Post-Secondary Success Team, which includes (2) Alumni Success Coordinators and ancillary support staff from the Michigan College Access Network and/or the Michigan College Access >>> The primary role of the Dean of College and Post-Secondary Success is to cultivate a college going/post-secondary atmosphere at JRLA. All scholars and staff should know their role within the system to ensure that all scholars have a post-secondary plan that is accessible for them and their families.

Established in 2011 by NBA Star Jalen Rose and Co-Founder Michael Carter, JRLA is located on the Northwest side of Detroit in the zip code where Jalen grew up. An open enrollment, tuition-free, public charter high school, JRLA provides a leadership-focused education to 420 scholars and nearly 900 alumni.  The mission is to empower all scholars to develop the strength of character, skills, and knowledge needed to matriculate, be great in, and graduate from college or a post-secondary program so that they have the opportunities to be successful in the competitive world and take care of themselves and the people they love. 

Built around a 9-16 model, JRLA has never wavered in its pursuit to improve the educational landscape for Detroit area youth. After 13 years of operations, JRLA remains steadfast in its commitment to not only get scholars to graduate from high school but for them to graduate from college or a post-secondary program as well – outcomes that are real game changers in urban education. With a 97% high school graduation rate, 100% college and post-secondary acceptance, and a leader among open enrollment high schools in Detroit for college matriculation (71% compared to a state average of 65%), JRLA knows the path to college and a successful future.

JRLA is authorized by Central Michigan University and managed by Phalen Leadership Academies (PLA), a transformative educational network working to create great schools and improve student outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. JRLA Campus Responsibilities
    1. Manage Post-Secondary Team
      1. Outline roles and responsibilities for Alumni Success Coordinators & MCAN/MCAC support personnel
      2. Outline projects necessary to cultivate post-secondary/college going atmosphere
      3. Expose scholars and families to various post-secondary opportunities
        1. Ensure all scholars/families are prepared to transition to post-secondary placement
        2. Ensure all scholars have completed the FAFSA
        3. Seek funding opportunities for post-secondary programming
      4. Seek out funding opportunities for scholars to continue with post-secondary education
        1. Grants
        2. In-house Scholarship management
        3. External scholarship/grant opportunities
      5. Co-create programing and/or curriculum necessary for scholars and staff to expose and ensure scholars are prepared to matriculate and to be successful within their post-secondary placement
    1. Assist in creating and coordinating Professional Development
    2. Create, coordinate, implement, and manage partnerships with post-secondary institutions necessary to prepare scholars for post-secondary success
  2. Implementation of the Strategic Plan
    1. Manage Post-Secondary Team including all caseloads of 12th grade scholars:
      1. Ensure systems/structures are in place to navigate senior year and transition to post-secondary placement
    2. Manage all Post-Secondary placement supports
      1. Naviance
      2. Gradsnap
    3. Manage college/career pathways
      1. 4 year universities
      2. 2 year colleges
      3. Certification programs
      4. Military/Trade/Other Programs
      5. JRLA programming
      1. Cultivate and manage relationships and execute on-site/off-site college exposure programs
        1. Dual Enrollment
        2. Career/Technical Education Programs
        3. Advanced Placement support, as needed
        4. Onsite visits, rep visits, post-secondary field studies/tours/visits
    4. Support accurate record keeping for graduation requirements
      1. Support Dean of Scholars with transcript audits as needed
      2. Support Assistant Principal/Dean of Instruction with creating/managing post-secondary course work on-site
      3. Assist in Coordination of the School Improvement Team and Plan
      4. Support the School Leader in the hiring process
      5. Additional Administrative Responsibilities, per Principal request

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Proper Michigan School Counselor credentials required.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Verification of identity and eligibility to legally work in the United States.
