Job Description - Decedent Care Rep

Description:

o Decedent Care supports the families of patients who have passed. They do this by consulting with the families and care team, discussing and detailing next steps, and eventually assisting in the transport of patients to the mortuary.

• Responsibilities:

o Decedent Care Reps are responsible for assisting with and documenting every step with the call notifying the department a patient has passed, to the patient being delivered to the morgue. Daily, consultants will respond to calls about patients passing, meet with the family and care team, discuss next steps with family, coordinate with various departments if additional operations are required (autopsy, transplant if a donor, pathology, histology, etc.), coordinate with Medical Chief Officer when appropriate, assist in identifying next of kin if no family is present at hospital, and set up funeral services where necessary. Decedent Care sees 130-160 calls per month for deceased patients. All shifts include at least 2 employees.

 Coordinate with physicians and nurses to determine the appropriate time to approach the family regarding the disposition of all matters of decedent care. Meet with next of kin and assist in completing all necessary paperwork. Arrange for body viewing as appropriate. Screen all deaths for medical examiner's jurisdiction in compliance with the state law. Request autopsy consent on all non-medical legal deaths. Complete all appropriate decedent care paperwork (i.e. all forms, documents and authorizations), in compliance with state and federal laws. Provide autopsy information to family members, medical and research personnel and others in compliance with departmental guidelines.

 Act as primary liaison between Hospital and funeral homes. Provide information to funeral homes, transporters, patient families, staff and security officers regarding decedent care and the hospital death policy. Release body to funeral home.

• Qualifications:

o 2+ years’ experience within healthcare (EMT, Paramedic, RN, Funeral Services, Aides, CMA, CNA, etc.) required

o 2 or 4-year degree in Mortuary Science preferred but no required

o Ability to speak professionally, empathetically, and accurately required

o Detail-oriented as all steps are documented meticulously required

• Hours (please confirm):

o 1 opening for 3rd shift

 Candidates will work alternating weeks (back and forth):

• Monday, Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday from 7:00p-7:00a

• Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7:00p-7:00a (36 hours this week)

• Pay Rate: $17.51-21.41-25.31/hour
