Deck Operator (2nd Shift)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Assures proper coverage of material by following the procedures outlined below:


2. Being sure that electrical controls are at proper settings to allow electrical current to flow

               through the arms and racks properly.

1. Making sure that dip tanks:

                 * have the proper water levels,

                 * the water is at proper temperatures (by doing regular verification as required),

                 * the chemical concentrations are at the proper pH levels (checking as required), and add acids

                    if necessary,

                 * be sure tanks have enough nickel and steel chips to ensure proper coating, 

                 * performs any other tests or visual checks or adjustments to be sure of proper coating.             

1. Cleans filters once a week.


2. Careful monitoring of plater assembly line, arms and racks to be sure they are mechanically

      functioning properly to ensure that the current flows continuously.  Being alert for:

                 * burning or short circuits,

                 * fallen arms, racks and parts,

                 * fishing out racks or parts as they fall or accumulate at the bottom of the tanks,

                 * securing or replacing loose parts as needed.

1. Visually checks and inspects parts as they come through the line to assure a quality finish on the

      product so that it is ready for immediate shipment.

1. Completes Statistical Process Control Charts (SPC) as required.


2. Makes sure chemicals are available for the next shift.


3. Does inventory and provides list of chemicals needed for each job (as required).


4. Shuts down plater line at the end of the work week, making sure that the proper items are turned off,

      cleaned, refilled or recharged as needed. Cleans various tanks at the end of the work week (function

      varies with plant and shift).

1. Performs minor repairs of equipment.


2. Maintains a clean and safe work environment at all times.


3. Other job duties as assigned by supervisor.

SPECIAL JOB CONSIDERATION:  Possible problems if color blind.  Must be able to differentiate change in color after testing water.  Note: Type of acceptable color blindness depends on needs of test.  Also, cannot have respiratory problems such as asthma, emphysema or other pulmonary restrictions.  Must be clean shaven at all times.

TRAINING DESIRED:  Statistical Process Control, Linear Measuring, Problem Solving Training (to be determined by supervisor) and Confined Space Training.  Basic math is essential.  On-the-job training.

TYPICAL MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT INVOLVED:  Plater Line, Filters, Rectifiers, Respirator, Electric Pumps, Electric Motors, Dryer, Control Panel, Boiler and High Lift.

TOOLS AND GAGES:  DI Meters, Thermometers, Digital Readout on Tanks, Air Wrenches, Mechanical Hand Tools, Hoist, etc.

TYPICAL PRODUCTS INVOLVED:  Steel products, nickel, chrome, acids, caustics, soaps, paint, etc.

METHOD OF JOB ASSIGNMENT:  Usually taken off job orders.  Some verbal and written instructions.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Ability to do Statistical Process Control Charts (SPC).  Basic math and chemistry helpful.  Problem solving ability important.  Must be capable of wearing a respirator.

Stooping, Sweeping, Turning Pages and Weighing.

*Note: Cleaning may be essential to one shift more than to another.

HAZARDS:  Minor scratches, bruises and burns.  Possible skin irritations due to oils, soaps and chemicals.  Working in atmosphere with airborne chemicals.
