About Us
Goodwin Marine Services began as a single boat operation in 2002 when owner and operator Josh Goodwin and his 42’ Wesmac made the transition from fishing to offshore support and research.
The first of its kind, the 42’ Wesmac was equipped with a hydraulic A-frame, deck winches, and a lab space, and began providing oceanographic research and data collection services for a local environmental consulting company.
In 2004 after years of hydrographic and geophysical survey and environmental sampling and monitoring support, Goodwin Marine Services began a longstanding working relationship with Bluefin Robotics, now General Dynamics Mission Systems. Our support of Bluefin Robotics includes extensive AUV support, dive operations, target deployment, and vessel support and maintenance.
As the demand for a larger platform grew, the keel was laid for the purpose-built 55’ Wesmac R/V Jamie Hanna, which was completed by Clark Island Boat Works in 2012. Great care and attention to detail were used when designing the R/V Jamie Hanna, which created an ideal work environment for clientele. With a full lab space, deck winches, a certified 5,000lb capacity hydraulic A-frame, retractable sonar pole, and ample deck space, the Jamie Hanna makes for an incredibly versatile and stable work platform.
In order to serve an even greater range of purposes and to meet the growing demands of our clientele, Goodwin Marine Services began to research larger more adaptable vessel options. In 2017, considerable research led to the acquisition of the 110’ Graham-built offshore supply vessel, R/V James K Goodwin. Originally designed for the transport of goods and personnel to offshore oil platforms, the R/V James K Goodwin provides us with a sea-worthy and reliable vessel, capable of extended offshore missions and a wider range of services.
In 2019, we added a second, nearly identical 110’ Graham hull to our fleet and named it R/V Rachel K Goodwin. Along with ample deck space and sleeping accommodations, R/V Rachel K Goodwin has a custom-made detachable A-frame with 27’ vertical clearance that can easily collect twenty-foot vibracores.
Continued expansion into the offshore industry coupled with a broadening range of clientele led to the 2022 acquisition of the 145’ Master-built R/V Peter M Mahoney. Equipped with a 90’ x 30’ clear deck and a 10-ton hydraulic A-frame, the fully outfitted vessel provides an increased capacity for deck equipment and allows for a customizable layout based on client need.
In addition to providing decades of support for GDMS Bluefin Robotics, Goodwin Marine Services has conducted countless offshore research jobs for companies such as AECOM, APTIM, Battelle Labs, Coastal Engineering, Coastal Vision, Cornell University, Ecology & Environment, Epsilon Associates, FUGRO, Germano and Associates, Green Environmental, Inspire Environmental, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Ocean Renewable Power Corporation, Ocean Tech, Teledyne Benthos, The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, The University of New Hampshire, The US Army Core of Engineers, The US Geological Survey, The US Navy, U-MASS Dartmouth, Woods Hole Group, and many more. This work has included AUV/ROV operations, geophysical and multibeam bathymetric surveys, mooring operations, dredge monitoring, ADCP/CTD sampling, grabs, vibracoring, video and habitat mapping, fisheries studies, and more.
With over twenty years in the business, Goodwin Marine Services has remained committed to providing unparalleled inshore and offshore services to all manner of clientele, ranging from the Gulf of Maine to the Gulf of Mexico and beyond.
