Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Fire Chief or designee, Defensible Space Inspector. The Lakeside Fire
Protection District is seeking a highly motivated, community oriented individual for the position of At-Will Part Time,
Seasonal Defensible Space Inspector. Under the direction of the Fire Prevention Officer, the Defensible Space
Inspector performs technical inspections to ensure compliance with local, state and federal codes and related
ordinances pertaining to the prevention and control of vegetation.
Essential Job Functions
The following are the typical duties performed by employees in this classification. However, this job
specification is intended to identify essential functions and requirements of the job and should not be
considered all-inclusive.
• Issue burn permits, inspect, post and issue weed abatement notices; re-inspect to
determine compliance has been achieved on all violations.
• Issue handout to post address or install Knox switch on gate where no
address or switch is visible. Maintain records pertaining to weed abatement
inspections and action taken.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and the general
public using principles of good customer service.
• Prepare correspondence and written reports that are concise, thorough and
grammatically correct. Exercise independent judgment and work with a
minimum amount of supervision.
• Operate telephone, and office machines proficiently.
• Utilize common computer software programs including word processing, spreadsheet
and database programs.
After initial training, the applicant must demonstrate and display knowledge of: Fire Prevention methods pertinent
rules, laws and policies related to area of assignment, safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to job related
duties. Computer equipment as related to assigned work. Proper use of the English language, spelling, grammar and
punctuation.
Physical Profile
Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and in a typical office environment with the following
characteristics:
• Mobility – frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting, standing, kneeling, walking, and climbing
stairs; occasional bending or squatting.
• Lifting – frequently up to 25 pounds; occasionally up to 50 pounds.
• Vision – constant use of overall vision; frequent reading and close-up work; occasional color and
depth vision within normal range.
• Dexterity – frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing; frequent grasping, holding & reaching.
• Hearing/Talking – frequent hearing and talking within in normal range, in person and on the phone.
• Emotional/Psychological – frequent decision-making and concentration; frequent public and/or
co-worker contact; occasional working alone.
• Environmental – frequent and prolonged exposure to computer screens and noise, dust, loud noises,
and temperature extremes including heat, where temperatures exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, cold,
where temperatures approach 32 degrees Fahrenheit, rain, wind, humid or dry conditions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
•18 years of age of older and have a High School Diploma or equivalent.
•Any combination of education and experience which would demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of this classification. For example: College level courses in fire prevention, fire science, defensible space experience or other qualifications that demonstrate the ability to perform this classification.
•Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
TENTATIVE SELECTION SCHEDULE AND PROCEDURE
1. Filing Deadline – Tuesday, April 25, 2025 (4:00pm PST)
2. Oral Interview* – Week of May 5th
3. Prior to employment, the successful candidate will be required to complete and pass all areas of a conditional offer which may include drug screening, physical, backgrounds and fingerprinting.
