Departmental Project Lead – Editorial (Volunteer)

We’re looking for a Departmental Project Lead to support the Editorial team by coordinating projects, improving visibility across the newsroom, and ensuring collaborative progress.

Who We Are

WhoWhatWhy is a nonprofit investigative news organization producing deep-dive journalism on the most pressing issues of our time. We’re powered by skilled volunteers and a small core staff — from students to seasoned pros — who believe in ethical, independent journalism free from corporate or political influence.

About the Role

As the Project Lead for Editorial, you’ll:

• Attend weekly Editorial meetings (Mondays at 11:00 AM ET)
• Track ongoing editorial initiatives in Trello, spreadsheets, or shared docs
• Facilitate collaboration across editors, reporters, and cross-functional contributors
• Ensure project status, assignments, and deadlines are documented and visible
• Follow up on tasks and blockers with key team members
• Prepare basic project tracking summaries or timelines for team meetings
• Support visibility and accountability across editorial workflows

What We’re Looking For

• Some experience in project coordination or team-based work (internships and early-career welcome!)
• Strong communication and follow-up skills
• Familiarity with basic project tracking tools (e.g., Trello, spreadsheets, Google Workspace)
• Organized, reliable, and proactive in a remote work environment
• Passionate about nonprofit work and the editorial/journalism process

Commitment

We ask for a commitment of 5–7 hours per week and a minimum of 6 months. This includes department meetings, coordination follow-ups, and team collaboration.
