Job Description - Deputy Chief of Schools

Location: Hattie Mae White \n\nDepartment: Schools Office \n\nArea:District Wide \n\nContract Months:12 \n\nSalary Range: $200,000.00 \u2013 $235,000.00 \n\nAcademic Year: 26-27 \n\n## JOB SUMMARY\n\nThe Deputy Chief of Schools reports to the Chief of Schools at the Houston Independent School District (HISD) and is responsible for driving improved student outcomes across their area office. This leader will leverage student performance and staff effectiveness data to develop and execute strategic initiatives that support schools across all feeder patterns. This role is responsible for driving coherence between central office strategy and campus execution, ensuring that Senior Executive Directors, Executive Directors and Principals receive seamless, high-quality support that accelerates student outcomes. As part of HISD\u2019s transformation efforts, this role requires an unwavering commitment to high performance, accountability, and continuous improvement in alignment with the district\u2019s mission to prepare students for success.\n\n## MAJOR DUTIES \u0026 RESPONSIBILITIES\n\n1\\. Leadership \u0026 Performance Management \n\u2022 Recruit, select, develop, and evaluate Senior Executive Directors and Executive Directors, ensuring alignment with HISD\u2019s high-performance culture. \n\u2022 Set bold, measurable, and achievable goals for division leadership that drive student academic success and hold them accountable for results. \n\u2022 Implement differentiated retention strategies to recognize and retain high-performing leaders while addressing performance gaps effectively.\n\n2\\. Strategic Support \u0026 School Alignment \n\u2022 Work within and across feeder patterns, ensuring schools receive the necessary support in the most efficient manner possible so that instructional staff can focus on student achievement. \n\u2022 Collaborate with the Academics Office to ensure school needs are met, including overseeing specialized (federal) funding and compliance functions.\n\n3\\. Stakeholder Engagement \u0026 Communication \n\u2022 Serve as a district representative and communicate HISD\u2019s strategic initiatives to increase student achievement while promoting the district\u2019s mission. \n\u2022 Act as a liaison between the Superintendent and the Board of Education, providing expert recommendations and supporting HISD initiatives. \n\u2022 Attend all Board meetings and district functions, representing schools and advocating for their needs.\n\n4\\. Data-Driven Decision Making \u0026 Accountability \n\u2022 Define critical issues, identify resource needs, and establish clear performance goals aligned with student academic growth. \n\u2022 Utilize data to ensure instructional excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement at all levels.\n\n## MAJOR DUTIES \u0026 RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED\n\n5\\. Commitment to HISD\u2019s High-Performance Culture \n\u2022 Lead with a sense of urgency and accountability to drive transformational change in public education. \n\u2022 Model and reinforce HISD\u2019s vision for high-quality instruction\u2014ensuring excellence in every classroom, every day. \n\u2022 Ensure leaders and staff receive real-time, job-embedded coaching, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional growth. \n\u2022 Manage time and resources efficiently, ensuring schools operate seamlessly, from early morning openings to instructional planning and execution.\n\n6\\. Additional Responsibilities \n\u2022 Perform other job-related duties as assigned, supporting the district\u2019s mission and strategic priorities.\n\n## EDUCATION\n\nMaster\u0027s Degree\n\n## WORK EXPERIENCE\n\n7+ years in educational leadership within a large school system. Experience in an urban school district preferred. Experience as superintendent of schools, assistant superintendent or Executive Director at the district level is preferred. \nExperience working with multi-layered budgets including state, federal and grant funds required. Must be effective with large forum public speaking engagements and presentations. \nWorking experience with data driven accountability performance model.\n\n## SKILL AND/OR REQUIRED LICENSING/CERTIFICATION\n\nSAP, Microsoft Office, Chancery \nTeacher Certification, School Administrator Certification \n \n\n\n## LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES\n\nHISD Leadership \u0026 High-Performance Culture \nHISD is undertaking the most comprehensive public education transformation in the country. Policy, procedures and precedent are created and approved by this position. Supervision received typically consists of providing periodic coaching, advice and feedback.\n\n## BUDGET AUTHORITY\n\nParticipates in a group plan and/or budget development.\n\n## PROBLEM SOLVING\n\nGreater latitude and discretion is warranted in making decisions which affect major areas of HISD and possibly the organization\u0027s public image. The job is constantly expected to apply creative solutions to complex problems and develop new ideas and concepts. Reviews and approves decisions and/or recommendations that may have a significant impact on the entire organization. \n\n## IMPACT OF DECISIONS\n\nDecisions have a major impact to multiple divisions or the organization and may impact the general direction of HISD. Errors may cause continuous adverse influence on the future operations of the organization, in matters involving important customer commitments, organizational liability, and other matters which may appreciably affect future costs.\n\n## COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS\n\nNegotiate and influence - interprets department strategies and services, resolves conflicts, influences outcomes on matters of significance for the division, conducts final negotiations and coordinates approvals/decision making below the executive level. Interactions are typically with customers and Top Management.\n\n## CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS\n\nLeads others in the resolution of highly sensitive and confidential issues on behalf of the department. Acts as a trusted advisor, and becomes involved in the customer\u0027s decision making process including presenting alternatives and information and applying persuasion and negotiation skills in the resolution of problems. Monitors customer service standards.\n\n## WORKING/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS\n\nWork is normally performed in a typical interior work environment, which does not subject the employee to any hazardous or unpleasant elements. \n\u2022 Valid Texas driver\u2019s license with applicable insurance coverage. \n\u2022 Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including personal computer and peripherals \n\u2022 Posture: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting \n\u2022 Motion: Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching \n\u2022 Lifting: Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) \n\u2022 Environment: Prolonged or irregular hours, including some weekends; frequent districtwide travel \n\u2022 Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress, fast-paced\n\nHouston Independent School District is an equal opportunity employer. \n
