Job Description - Deputy Chief of Staff

Summary

Join a dynamic, mission‑driven organization at the forefront of New York’s clean‑energy future. As we lead the state’s generation and transmission of reliable, affordable, and increasingly renewable and nuclear power, we are seeking a strategic, agile, and highly collaborative Deputy Chief of Staff to help drive impact at the highest levels of the enterprise.

In this pivotal role, you will work in close partnership with the Chief of Staff, Executive Office, and Senior Leadership Team to ensure that the President & CEO’s priorities are translated into clear action and successfully operationalized across the organization. You will serve as a critical liaison—anticipating issues, managing sensitive and time‑critical matters, and ensuring the right information reaches the right leaders at the right time.

If you thrive in a fast‑paced environment, bring exceptional judgment and communication skills, and are energized by the opportunity to influence priorities that shape statewide energy strategy, this is a unique leadership role with broad visibility and meaningful impact.#LI-VB1

Responsibilities

  • Strategize with the Chief of Staff, President & CEO, and other EMC/senior leaders to resolve problems and ensure that priority initiatives are managed efficiently and communicated effectively to relevant internal and external partners.

  • Support the Chief of Staff and President & CEO in identifying and managing critical issues that have significant public or agency impact and require the attention of the President & CEO and other EMC/senior leaders.

  • Provide guidance to senior staff on behalf of the Executive Office on major initiatives to ensure effective and timely implementation of projects.

  • Collaborate with key personnel in business units and assess and elevate issues that need resolution to ensure successful execution of executive agenda.

  • Support the Chief of Staff with prioritizing and ensuring the President and CEO has all key information for decision making and is fully prepared for meetings, speaking engagements, and other events.

  • Create, collect, and maintain materials including reports, PowerPoint presentations, and other information for projects, special events and other initiatives.

  • Lead special projects as assigned by the Chief of Staff and President & CEO.

  • Understand the implication of various regulatory standards/policies being issued at both the federal and state level, upon NYPA’s strategic vision and ongoing activities and apply/educate others throughout interactions across the business.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A high degree of professionalism and discretion, with the ability to maintain complete confidentiality of extremely sensitive, proprietary information.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communications, and conflict resolution.

  • Demonstrated experience building collaborative relationships across all levels of an organization. Experience working closely with senior management.

  • Ability to perform complex tasks and prioritize work with limited supervision as well as meet deadlines and manage multiple projects in a timely manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to make sound decisions and balance multiple critical priorities.

  • Strong technology and computer skills and intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications

  • Familiarity with  governmental processes. Prior government agency experience is preferred.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Minimum 8 years of experience in a combination of executive support, project management, project implementation, or similar experience

  • Utility or Energy industry experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Approximately 15% travel, primarily within NY State to NYPA facilities.
