Deputy Marshal

The Shipshewana Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of full-time police officer. The primary function of the position is related to public safety and to enforce the laws of the State of Indiana and the ordinances of the Town of Shipshewana. Other duties include resolving conflict, maintaining order, deterring crime, assisting citizens, investigating crimes and traffic accidents, responding to medical assistance calls, and other special duties assigned by the Town Marshal. This is an hourly position with a starting pay of $25.19/hr. plus overtime. In addition, after each favorable review at 6 and 12 months of employment, the employee will receive an hourly increase of $0.25. Overtime may be mandatory at times. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, at least 21 years of age, must possess a high school diploma or GED, must have a valid driver’s license. Applicants must be a person of excellent character having favorable references from previous employers and personal references, with no pattern or practice of substance abuse or criminal misdemeanor convictions, and no history of felony convictions. After selection the recruit will be on probationary status during the first year, and as a condition of continued employment as a Deputy Marshal, the employee must complete all requirements of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and graduate from the basic training course within the first year of employment The employee will also be required to establish residency within the State of Indiana and a 15-mile radius of the town’s corporate limits, within the first year of employment.

JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY:

The primary function of the position is related to public safety and to enforce the laws of the State of Indiana and the ordinances of the Town of Shipshewana. This position requires a strong commitment to public service, integrity, and the ability to work under stressful, high-risk conditions. Successful completion of the Tier I basic law enforcement academy course must be completed within one year from the date of hire, as a condition of continued employment.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Have a working knowledge of, and comply with, the latest edition of the Town’s Personnel Policy Handbook, the Police Department’s Standard Operating Procedures, other applicable Town policy and procedures, and applicable law.


• Participate in daily patrol activities by foot or by vehicle; respond to public calls of assistance; investigate criminal incidents, investigate vehicle collisions, pursuing, apprehending, arresting, restraining, and processing suspects and violent persons, possibly involving the use of deadly force; secure crime scenes; issue traffic citations/summonses; seize property and/or criminal evidence and provide chain-of-custody evidence; maintain public order; interview victims and witnesses; interrogate suspects; transport prisoners; etc.


• Attend required training courses and seminars; participate in physical fitness activities


• Dress professionally and neatly with uniform and badge, consistent with protocols


• Maintain regular and punctual attendance


• Respond to medical emergencies


• Conduct criminal investigations


• Assist the public and police agencies at any time in any manner possible.


• Perform a variety of courtesy services


• Coordinate and assist investigative efforts with other law enforcement agencies


• Any other special duties as assigned by the Town Marshal.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:

Candidate must have:

• A valid Indiana driver’s license.


• A high school diploma or GED equivalent or higher; and


• US Citizen, at least 21 years of age


• Working knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, and government regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Requires:

• A local, state, and federal comprehensive criminal background check


• A sex offender registry and credit check


• Medical and psychological evaluation


• Pre-employment substance abuse testing


• Random ongoing alcohol and controlled substance testing

Knowledge of:

• Modern police practices, techniques, and methods inclusive of community policing


• Modern investigative methods


• Principles and practices of organization and personnel management


• Modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment


• Functions and objectives of Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies


• Pertinent federal, state laws, and local ordinances, particularly with reference to apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, evidence and records maintenance and traffic control

Ability to:

• Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.


• Effectively plan, direct supervise, and coordinate the work of assigned personnel


• Properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, and policies
