The Shipshewana Police Department is currently accepting applications for the position of full-time police officer. The primary function of the position is related to public safety and to enforce the laws of the State of Indiana and the ordinances of the Town of Shipshewana. Other duties include resolving conflict, maintaining order, deterring crime, assisting citizens, investigating crimes and traffic accidents, responding to medical assistance calls, and other special duties assigned by the Town Marshal. This is an hourly position with a starting pay of $25.19/hr. plus overtime. In addition, after each favorable review at 6 and 12 months of employment, the employee will receive an hourly increase of $0.25. Overtime may be mandatory at times. Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, at least 21 years of age, must possess a high school diploma or GED, must have a valid driver’s license. Applicants must be a person of excellent character having favorable references from previous employers and personal references, with no pattern or practice of substance abuse or criminal misdemeanor convictions, and no history of felony convictions. After selection the recruit will be on probationary status during the first year, and as a condition of continued employment as a Deputy Marshal, the employee must complete all requirements of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and graduate from the basic training course within the first year of employment The employee will also be required to establish residency within the State of Indiana and a 15-mile radius of the town’s corporate limits, within the first year of employment.

JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The primary function of the position is related to public safety and to enforce the laws of the State of Indiana and the ordinances of the Town of Shipshewana. This position requires a strong commitment to public service, integrity, and the ability to work under stressful, high-risk conditions. Successful completion of the Tier I basic law enforcement academy course must be completed within one year from the date of hire, as a condition of continued employment.
