Job Description - Deputy Sheriff


Description:

Deputies in the patrol division have the responsibility to provide law enforcement services by handling calls and patrolling the unin­corporated areas of Miami County. Deputies also provide the primary law enforcement duties through agree­ments and contacts to the Village of Bradford, Village of Pleasant Hill, Vil­lage of Laura, Village of Fletcher, Vil­lage of Casstown, Bethel Township, and the Miami County Park District. Deputies can also be called upon to assist Sheriffs in other counties during emergencies. 

Deputies can be assigned to:

  • Promotional Opportunities - sergeant, lieutenant, captain 
  • Patrol / Traffic Enforcement
  • Detective Section
  • Court Service /Inmate Transports
  • School Resource Officer
  • Special Response Team (Tactical)
  • Crisis Negotiator
  • Evidence Technician
  • Park District Deputy/Bike patrol
  • Crash Reconstruction 
  • K9 Deputy

Salary Information:

Starting pay can range between $32.91 and $40.64 an hour depending on experience. Under the current contract, the top pay for a Deputy is $40.64 an hour.

Benefit Information:

The Miami County Sheriff's Office offers an at­tractive and competitive fringe bene­fits package. 

  • Health Insurance: Anthem/ CE­BCO administers the Health In­surance plan for physicians and hospital services covering the employee, spouse, and children. The family health insurance will cover a spouse who is able to receive health insurance through their current employer.
  • Life Insurance: Benefit of $20,000 plus an option to purchase additional insurance at reduced rates. Coverage is avail­able for a spouse also.
  • Personal Liability Insurance: Pro­fessional liability insurance is pro­vided at no cost for $1,000,000 per incident.
  • Vacation Time: Two (2) weeks beginning year two (2) for the first eight (8) years; then ad­vances in stages up to five (5) weeks after twenty-two (22) years.
  • Clothing and Equipment Allow­ance: Uniforms are provided at no cost, including uniform dry cleaning.

Testing Process:

Upon completion of the initial application you will receive an email with further instructions on completing the application process and scheduling testing through National Testing Network, Inc. Upon completion of the entry-level ex­am, all candidate scores are automati­cally forwarded to the MCSO. Candi­dates who attain a passing score will be placed on the department's eligibility list. MCSO will contact candidates on the list and will invite them to continue to participate in other stages of the se­lection process.
