Design Engineer - Highway Construction




Union Paving & Construction, a family business founded in 1954, is still anchored to the principle that hard work prevails in the face of any challenge. Our work spans multiple disciplines in civil engineering for entities such as the NJDOT, NJ Turnpike Authority, Port Authority of NY & NJ, and NJ Transit. Our expertise in all areas of road, bridge, and rail construction enables Union Paving and its affiliates to continue to bring value to a highly competitive public bidding market.



Essential job functions:



  • Provide Civil Engineering support for all projects and management, both preliminary and during construction. 

  • Conduct periodic technical reviews of project drawings, plans, and specifications with project managers.

  • Develop cost effective designs based on construction specifications and requirements.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with project management and clients.

  • Analyze design issues and recommend corrective actions.

  • Compile all pertinent design and engineering information to assist project management with claim preparation when necessary.

  • Perform quantity takeoffs, learn estimating procedures and assist Estimating Department with bid preparation when necessary.

  • Prepare and maintain accurate design files for reference.

  • Monitors the progress of designs and provides status updates to management.


Skills/Qualifications:


·         10-15 years of experience with heavy highway and road construction, or similar, projects with public agencies


·         Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Licensed Professional Engineer in NJ


·         Strong knowledge of engineering standards and methods, i.e. foundations and soil mechanics, design, and testing; infrastructure engineering; roadway design 


·         Strong analytical and organizational skills with a commitment to high standards


·         Ability to estimate time and costs


·         Strong work ethic and team player


·         Proficient with all MS Office software, latest software and technologies for designs, experience with HeavyJob and HeavyBid a plus
