A workstation cannot connect, a standard application will not open, or a new employee needs an approved device prepared. The Desktop Support Technician handles these issues at the employer's site. You will investigate within your access, explain what you find, and record enough detail for another technician when an issue needs escalation.
This is a full-time position paying $30.50-$36.00 per hour. It calls for practical technical ability and patient communication with people who may not know how to describe the fault they see.
Not every problem should be approached in the order it was reported. If several employees cannot access a shared application, record the number of affected users and escalate the pattern promptly. A single workstation issue may be handled through a documented local check. You will learn the employer's priority rules, but you should bring enough judgment to recognize when the scope of an issue has changed. Communicating that scope clearly helps the next technician decide where to investigate and helps affected employees receive an honest update.
The first obligation is to follow the employer's access and security procedures. You should not bypass a control simply to close a ticket. If the cause is uncertain, document what you have verified and involve the next level of support. A user who cannot resume their task needs a clear status, even when the technical solution will take longer.
The technician should learn to ask which users and devices are affected before choosing a fix. A single printer with a paper issue is different from a shared service that several departments cannot reach. You may resolve the first within a documented procedure and escalate the second with the scope of impact clearly noted. If a replacement device is prepared, check that it is the authorized device and record its assignment. Careful setup and accurate inventory information make future support easier and help protect the employer’s equipment.
When a request cannot be completed immediately, a realistic status and a documented next step help the employee plan around the interruption.
That status is important to the employee waiting for a fix.
You should be able to troubleshoot common computer and peripheral problems using a methodical approach. Relevant schooling, a certificate, a home lab, or prior end-user support may have given you that foundation. Help desk experience is an advantage, though it is not the only evidence of practical skill. The employer will teach its own ticket process and approved software. The position is suitable for someone growing as a support technician, not someone who needs to have managed an entire network.
When a solution works, leave a ticket that another technician could follow. Note the symptom, the approved action, and the result. A recurring issue across several employees should be brought to the person who can investigate the broader pattern. Clear records help prevent an endless cycle of separate tickets for the same underlying problem.
You will spend part of the day at desks or work areas and part communicating through the support queue. Different employees have different levels of comfort with technology. Explain the next step in ordinary language without talking down to them. Being technically capable and easy to approach makes the support team more effective.
On your resume, identify the systems or devices you have supported and the type of troubleshooting you performed. Training projects and independent practical work are relevant when described accurately. We are interested in candidates who can explain a problem clearly as well as investigate it. If you’re selected for the next step, you may be asked to complete an application on the hiring company’s website. You may be asked to discuss how you approached a common support issue during the hiring process. Please provide current contact information.
