Job Description - Detail Runner

Summary/Objective:

The Detail Runner supports fabrication and welding operations by moving, staging, and preparing steel materials and components throughout the shop. This role assists fitters and welders by ensuring materials are properly detailed, positioned, and available at each stage of the fabrication process while maintaining a clean and safe work environment.

 

Essential Duties (other duties may be assigned):   

  • Lift, position, and remove steel workpieces to support fitting and welding operations.
  • Assist fitters and welders with material handling and preparation.
  • Attach chains, slings, and other approved rigging or handling equipment to materials in preparation for movement by overhead crane or jib.
  • Detail beams and stage materials according to fabrication requirements and shop drawings.
  • Move materials from fabrication areas to welding areas and other designated shop locations.
  • Clean and maintain work areas, machines, tools, and equipment to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support shop operations.

  • Grinders, scrapers, hammers, and other handheld tools
  • Chains, slings, and material handling equipment
  • Overhead cranes and/or jib cranes (as trained and authorized)

Employee must be familiar with and comfortable using the tools and equipment associated with this position.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Experience Required :  

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); and/or a minimum of three (3) months of related training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and shop drawings/prints.
  • Familiarity with operating overhead cranes and/or jib cranes (training or certification preferred, as applicable).
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, using all units of measure.
  • Ability to interpret fabrication, erection, and detail prints.

 

Certificates and Licenses: OSHA-10 Certification.

 

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here reflect those an employee typically encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. This position operates in a non-climate-controlled fabrication/production shop, which may include routine exposure to dust, noise, and varying temperatures.  The noise level in the work environment can be high, requiring the regular use of hearing protection and adherence to company PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) policies.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to assist individuals with disabilities in performing the essential functions of the job. While the noise level in the work environment may vary from moderate to more extensive decibels, hearing protection is required.

 

Physical Demands:

The physical demands outlined here represent the requirements that an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to fulfill these essential functions. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to speak and listen.  

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. regularly and up to 75 lbs. occasionally.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, twisting, and reaching.
  • Ability to work in outdoor conditions (heat, cold, rain) and around loud equipment.
  • Ability to safely work around moving machinery, overhead cranes, and industrial equipment.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toe footwear.
  • Ability to visually inspect materials, tooling, and finished parts for quality and safety concerns, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment that may include exposure to noise, dust, vibration, temperature changes, and fumes.
  • Ability to maintain visual acuity and depth perception necessary for safe equipment operation, with or without reasonable accommodations.  Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

 

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

This is a full-time position.  Hours of work may change based upon the needs of the business.
