Job Description - Development Director

Position Overview


The Finance Director provides strategic leadership over BBJ/HBCU's financial management, fundraising, and grant compliance functions. This role oversees a diversified revenue portfolio, leads grant development and reporting, manages donor stewardship, and ensures that all financial activities align with organizational mission, funder requirements, and applicable regulations. The Finance Director works closely with the Deputy Director and Executive Director to sustain and grow the organization's financial health and long-term funding strategy.



Key Responsibilities



Financial Management & Compliance



  • Oversee organizational financial operations including budgeting, forecasting, accounts payable/receivable, and financial reporting.

  • Ensure compliance with federal grant requirements including HRSA guidelines, 2 CFR 200 Uniform Guidance, and all applicable regulations.

  • Collaborate with operations and program leadership to align financial activities with grant deliverables.

  • Support audit preparation and coordinate required external financial reporting.

  • Monitor grant budgets and flag variances or compliance risks promptly.


Fund Development & Grant Management



  • Develop and implement a comprehensive annual fund development plan aligned with organizational goals.

  • Identify, cultivate, and steward individual donors, corporate sponsors, foundations, and institutional funders.

  • Lead grant proposal development, submission, and compliance reporting in collaboration with program staff.

  • Maintain grant calendars, reporting schedules, and compliance deadlines.

  • Build and manage a diversified revenue portfolio including grants, major gifts, events, corporate partnerships, and online campaigns.


Donor Stewardship & Communications



  • Develop systems for donor acknowledgment, stewardship, and retention.

  • Maintain accurate donor records and reporting in CRM or tracking systems.

  • Coordinate donor communications, impact reports, and appreciation events.

  • Support board members and the Executive Director in donor engagement efforts.

  • Ensure development-related communications reflect organizational mission, equity commitments, and cultural integrity.


Events, Campaigns & Community Partnerships



  • Lead planning and execution of fundraising events including galas, giving days, and community campaigns.

  • Develop sponsorship packages, secure event sponsors, and oversee campaign strategy.

  • Build and maintain corporate and community partnerships to strengthen organizational visibility.

  • Represent HBCU at networking events, funder meetings, and conferences locally, nationally, and as needed internationally.



Qualifications & Requirements



  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, or a related field; Master's preferred

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in nonprofit financial management, grant compliance, or fund development

  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal grant compliance including HRSA and 2 CFR 200 preferred

  • Proven track record of meeting fundraising goals and managing donor relationships

  • Proficiency with accounting software, CRM systems, and Google/Microsoft Office suites

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to translate financial data for diverse audiences

  • Demonstrated commitment to organizational mission, equity, and cultural integrity

  • Independent, reliable personal transportation required

  • Ability and willingness to travel locally, nationally, and as needed
