Development Manager 

Key Responsibilities: Oversee all aspects of fundraising strategy and plans pertaining to major grants, donors and special events. The position requires strong organizational and networking skills, the ability to work on various fund-raising strategies and events simultaneously with a keen eye for detail. The Development Manager is responsible for creating and implementing fund development plans to achieve the fund development strategy co-created and developed with the Executive Director and Finance and Administrative Director.

About CAT: Community Alliance of Tenants (CAT) has spent the last 24 years building a housing justice movement led by renters. We are a membership-driven organization taking great pride in educating and empowering one another to demand safe, stable, and affordable housing. CAT is building a strong housing justice movement that is led and directed by those who are most impacted by Oregon’s affordable housing crisis- low-income tenants, predominately low-wage workers, families with children, people living with disabilities, seniors, Black, Indigenous and people of color. We use a three-pronged approach to Tenant Power: Tenant Education, Tenant Organizing, and Tenant Advocacy. We operate an educational hotline run by staff and volunteers – walking callers through their rights and responsibilities one-on-one. We host dozens of community workshops each year and connect with each other through a deep network of community partners and service providers to meet various needs as they arise. We organize our friends, families and neighbors in our buildings and on the streets to build a culturally-humble, equity-driven, intersectional housing justice movement led by those of us who are most-impacted by housing injustices. We support the leadership and learning of our fellow housing advocates building on our shared experiences and knowledge. Finally, we learn from and represent one another on councils, boards, and civic engagement opportunities throughout the state for long-range systems change.  Responsibilities

• Streamline fundraising records database function with assistance from Finance and Administrative staff


• Co-develop an annual fundraising strategy, including grants and donors


• Maintain, manage and update the annual calendar for grant applications and reports to insure grants are written on time and reports on grants are filed on a timely basis


• Develop and implement an annual fundraising plan with specific goals, strategies, timelines, and benchmarks to acquire, renew, retain donors, partners base of sustainable local, regional and national of grants donors


• Establish and implement campaign goals and solicitation plans


• Design a comprehensive stewardship recognizing individual and institutional donors


• Maintain positive relationships with major funders


• Work with CAT Directors to enhance donor relations and fundraising


• Assist with annual signature fundraising event that leverages corporate sponsorship solicitation, auction procurement, ticketing and other event logistics


• Manage and oversee annual fundraising activities including planning and execution


• Identify and prepare grants with help and support of Finance and Administration Director and Executive Director


• Participate with the CAT Executive Directors, Department Directors and other staff in developing a communications and fundraising plan for the organization


• Represent CAT at community activities to enhance the organization’s community profile


• Work closely with Communications Manager to enhance CAT’s social media outreach through content delivery via Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, email, or direct mail


• Oversee gift processing and acknowledgement and support from staff


• Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in communications, development or related area


• Five or more years' of relevant professional fund development work experience in a marketing capacity

Work Condition

• Ability to transport oneself to regular meetings and events throughout Oregon. 


• Abile to sit for long periods of time. 


• Able to lift 20 lbs.


• Combination of regular required  in-person and remote work. 


• Required to work some evenings and weekends


• Drivers license and insurance when driving for work

Required Skills and Knowledge

• Ability and knowledge to coordinate fundraising activities and events


• Skilled in fundraising practices


• Knowledge of effective marketing skills and strategies


• Ability to manage and effectively use multiple marketing platforms including all social media and websites


• Strong understanding of donor management software systems, event platforms, and MS Office Suite (including word, excel, etc.)


• Highly organized


• Ability to function well under pressure


• Detail-oriented


• Ability to self-start, work independently to achieve high standards and meet deadlines


• Reliability and integrity with the ability to handle confidential matters with the utmost discretion


• Excellent communication, including written, speaking, editing, and proofreading skills


• Adept in developing and maintaining strong relationships with management, staff, donors, and other stakeholders


• Exhibit a high degree of professionalism, careful judgment, tact and diplomacy


• Excellent problem-solving skills 

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a nonprofit organization


• Bilingual (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian as examples)


• Lived experience with housing instability


• Lived experience and/or understanding of race-based disparities


• Brings empathy, passion and humor to the work


• Willingness to challenge oppression in all aspects of work

Compensation and Benefits

 $70,000 to 80,000 DOE

Benefits package including 100% paid medical and dental for spouse or domestic partner and children; Oregon sick leave; Personal time off minimum of 120 hours per year; Family Leave after 180 days of employment; opportunity to participate in Oregon Saves Roth IRA program

All CAT positions are funded primarily by grants and positions may be eliminated at any time due to business need and available funding. 

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, CAT is reliant on annual government grants as its primary source of funding. This position is funded 25% through the OHCS grant, and 75% through administrative indirect funds, unrestricted and general support funds. This position is subject to the availability of those funds.
