DEXA Technician

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

• Responsible for performing specialized imaging scans to measure bone density to help in the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions such as osteoporosis or assessment of fracture risk.
• Evaluates images for technical quality, completes patient history forms with medical information relevant to the scan and answers patient questions.
• Ability to use the computer applications for charging, scanning, making sure images are sent to the correct places.
• Ensure patient comfort and safety throughout the scanning process.
• Ability to be fluid with schedule needs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

• Director of Imaging 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Greets patient, verifies with two identifiers, obtains relevant patient history and provides exam instruction.
• Positions and immobilizes patients correctly to ensure accurate results by minimizing radiation exposure, adjusting equipment per protocol and ensuring patient comfort and safety while obtaining high quality exams. 
• Accurately critiques images checking for artifacts and adjusting factors for technical quality and diagnostic acceptability.
• Images are delivered to the patient physician for reading/interpretation.
• Perform machine warm-up, quality control and data analysis daily.
• Cleans and disinfects equipment before upon completion of examination.

The job holder must demonstrate current competencies for the position. 

EDUCATION:

• High School Diploma or GED or higher
• Exposure to the medical field 

EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum of one year of experience in medical field or imaging modalities
• One year of DEXA experience preferred.

REQUIREMENTS:

• CPR Certification maintained
• Ability to communicate clearly
• Show attention to detail 
• Work independently and part of team

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

• Knowledge of anatomy and physiology
• Knowledge of DEXA equipment and testing.
• Knowledge of safety hazards related to DEXA.
• Skill to properly position patients to provide high quality images.
• Skill in trouble-shooting equipment.
• Skill in training co-workers in equipment operations.
• Ability to identify problems.
• Ability to communicate clearly.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships.
• Capable of demonstrating flexibility with the operational demands of the department.

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Medical offices and DEXA exam rooms.
• Exposure to radiation
• Communicable diseases

• Requires full body motion.
• Must be able to lift/carry/move items weighing up to 50 pounds
• Requires positioning patients
• Requires 20/20 correctable vision
