SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES: 


This position is with the Hualapai Tribe’s Special Diabetes Program for American Indians (SDPI), is under the supervision of the Manager of the Hualapai Fitness Center and will collaborate with all other SDPI program personnel. The position has three primary responsibilities: 1) develop, coordinate and lead regular physical activities for community members; 2) provide training on exercise equipment and 3) assist in the supervision of the Fitness Center.  Other duties include working with the other program staff to complete required program wellness measures with tribal members, enter data, contribute to the development of a calendar of physical activities and advertise the program, activity sessions and special events to the community through flyers and radio announcements. Fitness Specialist will work with other program staff and other tribal programs to implement outreach and motivational interventions to support positive health behaviors and to assess enrolled participants' health indicators, e.g., body mass index, HbA1c, and percent body fat.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:




  • Ability and willingness to design and lead regular physical fitness activities including strength training and stretching/flexibility classes for all age groups, with specific focus on those who do not regularly exercise.


  • Work with Fitness Center Manager and staff to ensure the Fitness Center is clean and the equipment is in good operation.


  • Provide day-to-day oversight to operations of the Fitness Center.


  • Provide one-on-one assistance to community members using the Fitness Center.


  • Once trained, conduct assessments of participants’ health measures, provide an explanation of outcomes and enter data into an electronic data system.


  • Work with other program personnel to provide basic health with fitness activities.


  • Ability to review and order new equipment and incentives for program implementation.


  • Work with local and outside programs to offer health activities to the community.






MIMIMUM QUALIFICATION:




  • Experience in physical education or fitness leadership; if not certificated, willing to gain certification and training in fitness leadership and health education


  • Organization skills to schedule physical activity classes, keep records of attendance and assist in maintaining program records and files.


  • Willing to work with community members who have a range of physical abilities; must be willing to work with those who do not exercise regularly or are unfamiliar with fitness activities and equipment.


  • Computer skills: Microsoft Wordtm and comfortable exchanging and attaching information via emails.


  • Experience working as part of a team.


  • Willing to work with all community members and local departments and programs.


  • Willing to be creative to “market” health promotion and diabetes prevention activities to the community and tribal employees.


  • Accountability and willing to work with minimal supervision.


  • Ability to conduct oneself professionally both face-to-face, on the phone and over the internet.


  • Pass a background check.



PERFERRED EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION




  • AA or AS degree or Certificate in Health Education, Recreation, Physical Education or a related field


  • Experience in implementing regular fitness activities.


  • Post high school experience in a health, physical fitness or community service field


  • Experience with software programs (Publisher, Power Point) for developing flyers about health events or presentations about health topics.
