Responsibilities
POSITION DUTIES:
Serve as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist in the Department of Radiology, Molecular Imaging. Perform a variety of complex imaging procedures covering multiple imaging modalities to include Positron Emission Tomography (PET), Computed Tomography (CT), Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), and Gamma Camera Scintillation Scans and Dual Energy X-ray Absorption (DEXA). Participate in research studies; collecting and analyzing data to develop imaging parameters and exam protocols. Use and maintain a wide range of diagnostic imaging equipment; set up and monitor quality controls and provide training for civilian and military technical personnel, diagnostic radiologic residents, and phase II students in the technologist program.
MAJOR DUTIES:
1. PET/CT: Provide expertise in performing a wide range of complex imaging procedures utilizing PET/CT hybrid imaging equipment and modern methodologies; accurately acquiring and processing data to optimize the studies for physician interpretation. Utilize sealed and unsealed positron-emitting radioactive materials for diagnostic and research purposes. Under the direction of an authorized user (i.e. NRC licensed radiologist) use ionizing and nonionizing radiation. Perform quality control tests to ensure PET/CT scanner and all accessory equipment is functioning optimally and in a safe manner; and if necessary, perform trouble shooting to identify and correct any issues or submit request for repair. Position patients on the PET/CT scanner and perform appropriate scan. Perform diagnostic CT scans in conjunction with molecular imaging on PET scanner. Process the studies and operate the hybrid imaging systems. Incumbent takes the initiative to improve technical skills and theoretical knowledge and remains current with new technologies and requirements. Review patient's illness and pending diagnostic procedure; input lab orders as necessary, perform glucose monitoring, and provide proper instructions to patient, before, during and following procedure. Alter procedure based on incumbents' review of medical history. Coordinate with additional healthcare services such as anesthesia, lab, and radiation oncology as needed to meet diagnostic and treatment parameters. Maintain current proficiency in state-of-the-art molecular imaging utilizing multi-modality hybrid imaging equipment to perform diagnostic and new theranostic procedures. Independently plan studies, conduct research, review data and utilize information of new technology to develop new imaging procedures and methods to acquire necessary imaging on hybrid scanners. Provide information and education regarding new diagnostic and treatment procedures to health care providers, students and patients/families. Provide expedient care to acute, chronic and critically ill patients of all ages.
2. SPECT/CT: Provide expertise in performing complex diagnostic and therapeutic imaging procedures utilizing hybrid imaging equipment, incorporating SPECT/CT and modern methodologies; accurately acquiring SPECT and simultaneously acquired CT scan; and processing data to optimize the studies for physician interpretation. Perform quality control tests to ensure that SPECT/CT and all accessory equipment is functioning optimally and in a safe manner and if necessary, perform trouble shooting to identify and correct any issues or submit request for repair. Utilize sealed and unsealed radioactive materials as well as administering radioisotopes for diagnostic and research purposes. Under the direction of an authorized user, use ionizing and nonionizing radiation. Position patients on the SPECT/CT scanner and perform appropriate scan. Operate SPECT/CT and perform acquisition and processing of the exams. Provide information and education regarding new diagnostic and treatment procedures to health care providers, students, and patients/families.
3. Nuclear medicine imaging: Perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic imaging procedures utilizing nuclear medicine gamma scintillation scanners. Position patients for the imaging and perform appropriate scan. Administer radioisotopes for diagnostic and research purposes. Utilize modern methodologies, accurately acquiring and processing data to optimize the studies for physician interpretation. Perform quality control tests to ensure that all equipment is functioning optimally and in a safe manner and if necessary, perform trouble shooting to identify and correct any issues or submit request for repair. Operate in the radio pharmacy handling radioisotopes in order to compound the radiopharmaceuticals, elute the generators and troubleshoot any problem to maintain compliance with all regulations and guidelines as set forth by the Federal government. Handle all emergency situations to include radioactive spills and emergency add-on studies.
4. DEXA: Independently perform bone densitometry tests on state-of-the-art Duel Energy X-ray Absorption scanner producing accurate studies for bone mass measurement. Responsible for all technical aspects of equipment to include; preparing equipment, performing and maintaining quality control, data maintenance, checks operational integrity, provides instruction and education to patients concerning exam procedures. Position patients on the bone density scanner and perform appropriate scan, which includes scans of the spine, hip, forearm and whole body densitometry and body composition analysis. Compile pertinent gender specific history (potential pregnancy status) including orthopedic prosthesis, spinal or hip surgeries, current medications, annotate and provide this information to the nuclear medicine physician reading the study. Participate in research protocols requiring specific scan parameters to include maintaining separate database for evaluation. Coordinate release and transfer of images and data in accordance with all applicable privacy act and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) rules and regulations. Check computer parameters and verify accuracy of scan results. Provide training to nuclear medicine technology students on the proper performance and processing of bone density examinations. Utilize knowledge acquired through professional development to advise physicians and managers on changes in techniques in order to update department standard operating procedures (SOP).

Basic Requirement for a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: Radiology Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements: (1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others. (2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing diagnostic radiologic examinations/procedures: to include, arteriography procedures, and setting up examination room: such as, organizing/preparing sterile supplies, contrast media, or other required supplies needed. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). OR Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-09: Successful completion of a Master's or equivalent graduate degree, or two full years of progressively higher level graduate education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Diagnostic Radiology/Radiography. ORCombination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-09: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education in excess of 18 hours (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify.
