For over 40 years, AHCS has been the primary public behavioral healthcare provider in the Alleghany Highlands area, offering services to adults and children with challenges related to mental health, substance use, and developmental disabilities.

Role Summary

As a Direct Support Professional - Community Engagement, you will deliver community-based day support that helps individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities build skills, connection, and independence in everyday settings.

Key responsibilities include:
- Assess individual needs and goals; plan and carry out a schedule of community activities aligned with the person-centered plan
- Provide direct support in the community while promoting inclusion, meaningful participation, and personal choice
- Maintain accurate documentation and records
- Implement supports that protect health and safety
- Maintain confidentiality and professional conduct; collaborate with individuals served, families/caregivers, and community partners

Required qualifications/skills:
- High school diploma or GED (required)
- Related experience (preferred)
- CPR, Basic First Aid, and medication administration certification (required; may be obtained upon hire)
- Valid driver's license (required)
- Availability for evenings and/or weekends

Daily Rhythm

Most shifts take place during evenings and weekends and center on being out in the community with the people you support. You'll review the day's planned activities, confirm transportation details, and check in on any updates to schedules or preferences. Time is spent moving between community locations, helping individuals stay engaged, comfortable, and supported as plans unfold. Between activities, you'll complete timely notes and ensure information is organized for the team. The day typically ends with a final check that documentation is complete and any key updates are communicated for continuity of support.
