Job Description - Director, Digital Manufacturing Software

Divergent is a technology company that has architected, invented, built, and commercialized an end-to-end factory system called the Divergent Adaptive Production System (DAPS) that comprehensively uses machine learning to optimally engineer, additively manufacture, and flexibly assemble complex integrated vehicle structures and subsystems. Products created using DAPS are superior in performance, lower in cost, rapidly customizable to meet mission and customer-specific requirements, faster to market, and scalable on demand to high volume production. Divergent is a qualified Tier 1 supplier to global automotive OEMs, and Divergent is now expanding to support mission critical needs in the Aerospace and Defense sector. Join us to be a part of this transformative journey, where your impact will shape the future of technology and production.

Purpose

We are looking for a visionary leader to own and elevate the software that powers our factories. This role will partner with hardware engineers, web developers, and product owners to deliver the high‑performance code, toolpaths, and operator interfaces that keep our 3D printers, robots, CNC machines, and inspection systems running at their best. If you thrive on turning complex manufacturing challenges into elegant software solutions, enjoy driving cross‑functional roadmaps, and get energized by seeing real‑world equipment become faster, more reliable, and more cost‑effective, this is the opportunity to shape the future of smart manufacturing. This role will also focus on dramatically reducing non‑recurring engineering (NRE) through the automation of specialized skillsets associated with those factory systems.

The Role

You will define and execute the factory enablement software roadmap, aligning it with company‑wide objectives. Leveraging deep expertise in at least one manufacturing domain (additive manufacturing, industrial robotics, CNC, etc.) and solid software engineer fundamentals, you will:

  • Own product management for the existing factory software suite – act as the product manager for current software products, including AM Program Generation (Slicer, ABP), Assembly Program Generation (AMPS, V Cell), Support Removal Program Generation (ASR), and runtime software for factory hardware modules (runtime MMC for robotics, HMI/firmware for printers).

  • Lead crossfunctional collaboration – work with hardware engineers to generate G‑code, toolpaths, and scripts that meet performance targets; partner with the web platform team to design intuitive UIs, workflow automation, and system integrations.

  • Set strategy and standards – establish clear goals, SOPs, and KPIs for the software function; influence product roadmaps and sprint planning while shielding developers from day‑to‑day task tracking so they can focus on algorithmic innovation.

  • Automate specialized skillsets – develop reusable, automated solutions for slicer optimization, toolpath generation, robot motion planning, and inspection data pipelines, aiming to reduce one-off engineering effort by 30% within the first year.

  • Manage people and resources – hire, develop, and retain a high‑performing team of software engineers; own budgeting, staffing, compensation, and performance‑management decisions.

  • Drive measurable impact – tie software releases to concrete manufacturing improvements (yield, cycle time, downtime, OEE) and to quantifiable NRE savings; continuously seek ways to make hardware more reliable and cost‑

  • Provide handson technical guidance – draw on personal experience with additive manufacturing, industrial robotics, CNC machining, or inspection systems to mentor contributors and make credible technical decisions.

Success is measured not just by shipped code but by demonstrable gains in manufacturing efficiency, equipment effectiveness, and the amount of engineering effort eliminated through automation.

Basic Qualifications

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience

  • 3+ years in a senior technical leadership role

  • Strong background in manufacturing related software (CNC control, G-code generation, robotics motion planning, etc.)

  • Proven track record delivering complex, cross-functional hardware software projects

  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; ability to influence senior leadership

  • Hands-on experience with at least one of the following: additive manufacturing, industrial robotics, CNC machining, or inspection systems

  • Experience facilitating sprint planning, daily standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading distributed or multi-site engineering teams

  • UI/UX design experience for manufacturing operators (dashboards, HMIs, etc.)

  • Success implementing continuous improvement frameworks (Lean, Six Sigma, etc.) in software enabled manufacturing

  • Published work or patents in manufacturing automation or tooling

  • Familiarity with cloud-based manufacturing data platforms

  • Deep knowledge of Scrum, Kanban, and scaling frameworks (SAFe, LeSS)

  • Background in building platform‑level automation that reduces NRE across multiple product lines

Work Environment

  • Hybrid-Onsite (Torrance, CA)

Pay Range

$223,130 - $305,430 USD

What We Offer:
