Inside L'Oral'sResearch & Innovation Division, Development isresponsible for working closely with our over 42 brands to adapt and innovate formulations into new and exciting products based on consumer and marketing insights. In Open Development, our scientists work closelywith external manufacturers to develop and refine formulas to meet the needsand expectations of our consumers. Development of great products requiresbuilding strong, internationalcollaborations across different functions to ensure that productsare seen from inception to officialization for our local and global launchdeadlines.
We are seeking a Director to join and lead our Face Makeup Development team in our Clark, New Jersey Research facility. Inthis role, you will provide managerial, technical, and operationaladministration for the Makeup Products Category including providing leadership,direction, and development for our team.
As a Director for our Face Makeup Development team,your main responsibilities are: Leads the departmentalefforts to identify, recommend, adapt and utilize new producttechnology. Approves and issues as finalall formulas, either of US or worldwide origin, to manufacturing withall accompanying ingredient and product quality specifications andclearances as required for general safety, microbiology, claim support,processing, and product/package interaction. Tracks the progress of allongoing projects, verifies schedules, launch dates, and otherrequirements, and acts as needed to maintain direction and timing,consistent with plans. Proactively build and executea plan to upgrade current products to new technologies with the objectiveto maintain competitiveness and sustainability at any time. Develops and maintains acompatible and open working relationship with all other departmentsincluding Marketing, scale-up, Manufacturing, ProductSafety, international peers, etc. Plans and executes alldepartmental system requirements whose objective is to save time throughminimization of error, elimination of redundant or repetitive tasks andthe assurance of clarity of purpose of all departmental actions. Leads all elements ofdepartmental activity focused to identify, screen, and quickly produceprototype products utilizing new technology including visits to the FrenchR&D laboratories, attendance at meetings and seminars, review ofpatents and contracts with universities and testing organizations. Lead, develop and grow a teamof scientists, develop a career plan and recommends training anddevelopmental activities for all department staff, identifies neweducational opportunities and assures that all recommended activitiesoccurs and are followed up to measure impact. Serves as the technicalresource in Makeup products for Maybelline New York Develops, issues, andupdates annually generic/formulation guidelines in Makeup category.
To Succeed in this Position, You Have: A completed Bachelor's degreein a scientific (Biology, Chemistry, Materials Science etc.) orengineering (Chemical, Materials, Biomedical) field is required; advanceddegree (Masters or PhD)preferred. 7-10 years of relevantindustry experience (cosmetics/personal care, pharmaceutical, food orproducts), in advertising claims substantiation is required. Experience in clinicalclaims, instrumental claims, and/or consumer claims substantiationpreferred. Experience in claims relatedto packaging, sustainability, and product formulations preferred Knowledge of the productclaims regulations and U.S. compliance landscape preferred Strong communication skills(oral, written, and interpersonal) and negotiation skills, and theability to identify and recommend solutions to problems. Ability to work in a crossfunctional role and to interact effectively across highly matrixed globalorganization. Flexible and adaptable;ability to work in an exhilarating, fast-paced environment. Demonstrated management orleadership experience. 8-10+ years' experience informulation within Cosmetic Category with a minimum of 5 years in MakeupR&D Product Development within Consumer Products industries isrequired. Experience with consumerMakeup products, preferred. Strong technical backgroundin formulation. Viewed as a leading innovatorand leader in the industry. Must have good managementskills, leading and developing a team of scientific professionals. Must be able to articulateand implement a vision and motivate team members to achieve departmentgoals & objectives. Familiarity with testingmethodology and procedures. Fluency is French is a plus. Authorization to work in theUnited States on a full-time, permanent, ongoing basis without the needfor legal sponsorship now or in the future (required)
