Job Description - Director, Government Affairs

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Vice President for Government Relations, the incumbent is primarily responsible to oversee activities related to the legislative and regulatory agencies within the State of Rhode Island and Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The development, ratification and/or amending of laws and statues as they pertain to patient care, especially those which have significant impact related to the operations of Brown University Health and its affiliates, is the primary focus and responsibility.   Additionally, in conjunction with the Vice President for Government Relations, the incumbent is responsible for developing and implementing successful strategies to advance an advocacy agenda on behalf of Brown University Health, overall.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Represents Brown University Health in legislative and regulatory matters at the state and local government levels. Maintains contact with city and government officials with respect to compliance and regulations governing health care and initiates changes where required. 

Recommends health care policy positions regarding legislation, government, administrative policy, and other matters of public policy.  Establishes and maintains satisfactory customer and public relations through direct or delegated contacts with representative individuals or groups.

Gathers, investigates, researches, analyzes, and/or studies activities affecting organization-wide operations to ensure positive receptivity of Brown University Health and its affiliates among its' citizenry.

Informs and advises senior management regarding current trends, problems, and activities in health care to facilitate policymaking.  Participates in and formalizes corporate short- and long- range planning in areas of possible growth, expansion and new profit opportunities.

Represents hospital at state and local meetings, as well as conferences, and conventions.  Serves as Brown University Health representative on internal committees and external professional/civic service organizations.  Meets with council members and other representatives of the community to promote good municipal relations.

Serves as designated liaison between the community, government officials and Brown University Health.  Responds to routine inquiries as desired by administration. 

May design and implement policies and programs to enhance the organization's image and standing within the communities where Brown University Health affiliates are located.

EDUCATION:

A baccalaureate degree is required; a Master's degree is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of five years advocacy experience with a proven track record of formulating and implementing successful strategies advancing an advocacy agenda is also required.  Strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills are a must.

SUPERVISION:

Supervisory responsibility for state and local government relations consultants contracting with Brown University Health.

Pay Range:

$140,774.40-$232,273.60
