Job Description

The Director of Hessert Laboratories provides strategic and operational leadership for the Hessert Laboratory and the Hessert Laboratory at White Field, ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective functioning of these critical research facilities. This role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of lab operations, including facility safety, equipment maintenance, space utilization, and user support.

The Director serves as the primary decision-maker for scheduling and usage of lab spaces and equipment and is responsible for developing, implementing, and adjusting standard operating procedures. This includes the authority to make exceptions to policies or procedures when needed to support research continuity or address unique situations. The Director will also manage technical staff across both Hessert facilities and the Engineering Machine Shop and will serve as Chair of the Hessert Laboratory Committee.

This position manages important budgetary responsibilities, including oversight of the Hessert spending fund, gift fund, operational fund, and any other accounts related to the labs’ operations. The Director will also be a key liaison with the College of Engineering’s Facilities Program Director, contributing to the broader facility management strategy for the Multidisciplinary Engineering Research Building (MERB) and White Field, in addition to Hessert.

This position reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and plays a vital role in supporting the University of Notre Dame’s research infrastructure and mission.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily operations of Hessert Labs and the Engineering Machine Shop.
  • Supervise technical staff and manage technician workflows.
  • Administer budgets for the Hessert spending fund, gift fund, and operational accounts (FOAPALs).
  • Serve as Chair of the Hessert Laboratory Committee.
  • Maintain access control and generate usage reports; estimate and coordinate staffing needs.
  • Schedule facility and equipment usage; coordinate training and develop usage protocols.
  • Manage installation, maintenance, and servicing of lab equipment and infrastructure.
  • Respond to repair needs and coordinate external vendors as necessary.
  • Maintain manuals and standard operating procedures for lab equipment.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Facilities Program Director to ensure that building systems across Hessert, MERB, and White Field are well-maintained, that the appropriate facilities communications occur in a timely manner, that usage levels are understood and optimized, and that there is ongoing collaboration to ensure alignment with the college’s short-term and long-term facilities strategic planning.
  • Monitor facility conditions, report issues, and submit AiM work orders.
  • Manage card access and distribute building-specific notices (e.g., utility shutdowns, testing).
  • Gather and relay facility user feedback for ongoing facility renewal and planning efforts.
  • Support graduate student and faculty research by assisting with test setups and technical questions.
  • Coordinate with Building Services, ND Power Plant, and other University units as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science—preferably in Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) or Electrical Engineering Technology (EET)—or equivalent work experience in lieu of a degree
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in laboratory management, research facility operations, or a related technical field
  • Must be a U.S. citizen (Permanent residents and green card holders do not meet this requirement)

Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong background in mechanical design and experimental lab facility design
  • Experience with data acquisition systems and vacuum/air handling systems
  • Space planning knowledge and project coordination capabilities
  • Proven ability to make sound, independent decisions
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative mindset
  • Ability to manage complex technical environments and prioritize competing needs
  • Capable of performing the physical demands of the position, including heavy lifting, prolonged standing and frequent bending
