Job Description - Director, Marketing Technology & Engineering

Elastic, the Search AI Company, enables everyone to find the answers they need in real time, using all their data, at scale — unleashing the potential of businesses and people. The Elastic Search AI Platform, used by more than 50% of the Fortune 500, brings together the precision of search and the intelligence of AI to enable everyone to accelerate the results that matter. By taking advantage of all structured and unstructured data — securing and protecting private information more effectively — Elastic’s complete, cloud-based solutions for search, security, and observability help organizations deliver on the promise of AI.

What is The Role

The Director, Marketing Technology & Engineering owns Elastic's complete MarTech ecosystem — both what we build and what we buy. This role sets the technology strategy, drives a build vs. buy decision framework, leads engineering teams delivering first-party applications, and manages the full lifecycle of third-party platforms. The ideal candidate bridges product thinking, engineering, and marketing domain expertise to deliver a scalable, integrated, and measurable technology stack.

You’ll sit at the intersection of marketing, sales, engineering, and operations, guiding roadmap development, leading team execution, and aligning systems and workflows to our go-to-market strategy. From campaign tooling to CRM connectivity to intake automation, you’ll shape how marketers operate and how marketing connects to revenue.

This is a high-impact management role that requires deep technical proficiency, critical thinking, cross-functional collaboration, and a passion for enabling marketing scale through technology.

What You Will Be Doing

Strategy & Vision

  • Define and own the dual MarTech roadmap, covering both the product roadmap for what Elastic builds and the vendor roadmap for what Elastic buys, ensuring investments align with marketing and business objectives and that internal and external capabilities complement each other

  • Own and maintain the build vs. buy evaluation framework, including decision criteria, business case methodology, and recommendation process

  • Partner with XCMO and cross-functional stakeholders to translate campaign, demand gen, and go-to-market priorities into clear, actionable technology initiatives that drive execution, automation, and seller engagement

  • Monitor emerging tools, trends, and AI-powered capabilities to continuously assess their relevance to Elastic's stack

Engineering & Product Ownership

  • Own the product vision and prioritization for internally built marketing applications, including our custom React-based application

  • Directly manage engineers, defining requirements, sprint priorities, release cycles, and technical architecture decisions for first-party tools

  • Set engineering standards and make deliberate tradeoffs around technical debt, scalability, and capacity between net-new development and maintaining existing applications

  • Lead change management for new tool introductions, deprecations, and workflow migrations to ensure smooth transitions and solid adoption across impacted teams

Governance & Operations

  • Own the MarTech budget, including forecasting, headcount and vendor spend planning, renewal management, and ongoing spend optimization

  • Establish and enforce policies for tool usage, data standards, access controls, and vendor contracts; maintain a centralized inventory of all tools, licenses, and renewals

  • Ensure compliance with InfoSec security processes for all third-party and internal applications, and with data privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA) across the stack

  • Define and monitor KPIs for platform performance, utilization, and ROI; ensure tools and workflows have built-in instrumentation to evaluate adoption, performance, and business impact

Stack Assessment & Optimization

  • Conduct regular audits of the existing stack to identify redundancies, gaps, and consolidation opportunities

  • Lead business case development for new investments and deprecations, applying the build vs. buy framework to prioritize the highest-impact decisions

  • Drive platform adoption and ensure Marketing teams are extracting full value from existing tools through structured enablement and feedback loops

Onboarding & Enablement

  • Manage the end-to-end procurement and onboarding process for new tools, including vendor selection, contracting, implementation, and rollout

  • Develop training programs and documentation to drive adoption across Marketing for all platforms owned and managed by the MarTech team

  • Serve as the internal subject matter expert and primary escalation point for MarTech platforms

Integrations & Data

  • Own the integration architecture for Elastic's MarTech ecosystem — defining how internal applications and third-party tools connect to each other and to core systems including CRM, CDP, and data warehouse

  • Design and govern APIs for internal and external system integrations, partnering with IT, Data Engineering, and RevOps to ensure clean data flows, reliable syncs, and a unified customer data model

  • Lead troubleshooting and resolution of integration failures across vendors and internal teams

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Serve as the primary liaison and cross-functional connector across Marketing, IT, Product, Sales, Legal/Privacy, and Finance on all MarTech matters — aligning stakeholders and ensuring seamless execution of roadmap priorities

  • Own vendor relationships end-to-end: manage SLAs, lead contract negotiations, maintain day-to-day partner relationships, and conduct QBRs with key vendors to assess performance and value

Team Leadership

  • Develop a high-performing mixed team of MarTech platform specialists and software engineers; provide ongoing coaching, performance management, and career development

  • Set clear priorities and manage workload across the team; own planning, staffing, and organizational design as the function scales

  • Communicate priorities, tradeoffs, and business impact clearly to senior leaders; collaborate closely with executive stakeholders across departments

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, psychological safety, and inclusion; actively champion Elastic's Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DIBs) commitments

What You Bring

  • 10+ years in marketing operations, platform/product management, or business systems with a robust focus on tooling and infrastructure

  • 6+ years of people management, including leading managers and cross-functional teams

  • Proficient knowledge of B2B marketing and sales workflows, especially campaign execution, CRM integration, and lead management workflows

  • Experience delivering internal tools or custom applications in collaboration with engineering and program teams

  • Proficiency in platform thinking, with the ability to guide strategic roadmaps and drive execution across multiple teams

  • Proven ability to partner across functions and influence senior team members and executives

  • Well-developed program management instincts and an ability to balance iteration with long-term scale

Bonus Points

  • Experience in a global, high-growth SaaS environment.

  • Familiarity with Salesforce, Marketo, or other key GTM tools.

  • Exposure to compliance, data governance, and system integration challenges.

  • Background leading platform simplification or tool consolidation efforts.
