TITLE: Director of Activities                                    RESPONSIBLE TO: Administrator


JOB OBJECTIVE: Plan, schedule, and implement a program of individual and group activities based on resident's needs, in accordance with the facility's policies and programs and consistent with federal, state, and local rules and regulations.


JOB QUALIFICATIONS/DUTIES:


l . *Qualified/eligible for qualifications under NC state licensing regulations.



  1. Five or more years experience in nursing/health care/retirement setting.

  2. Thorough understanding of the needs of ill geriatric residents.

  3. *Must be able to use the English language to satisfy the communications and record keeping requirements involved in the performance of this job position with or without reasonable accommodation.

  4. Must maintain neat, well-groomed appearance adhering to dress code of the facility.

  5. *Must satisfy all established licensing and certification requirements applicable to this job position.

  6. *Must be able to safely perform all essential job functions without harm to self or others with or without reasonable accommodation.

  7. *Must comply with facility's drug testing and substance abuse program and policies.


Supervision (Given and Received):


Given: Activity Assistants.


Received: Supervised by Administrator.


Job Responsibilities and Duties:



  1. *Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the activity program for residents in the nursing center/assisted living unit.

  2. Keep abreast of current federal and state regulations, as well as professional standards, and make recommendations as needed on changes in policies and procedures to the administration.

  3. *Assist in development of the department budget and monitor expenditures to stay within the budget.

  4. *Interview residents and families as necessary to determine the spiritual, social, recreational, and emotional needs of the residents.

  5. *Perform administrative requirements, such as completing necessary forms, reports, etc., and submitting to the administrator as required.

  6. *Complete the activity component of the resident assessment within 14 days of admission and periodically thereafter as required.

  7. *Identify and document in the resident's care plan the activity interests, needs, and problems of the resident, and how these are being addressed. Update care plans according to requirements, or as condition changes.

  8. *Serve as an active member of the interdisciplinary team and attend resident care conferences.

  9. *Plan and implement evening and weekend functions as necessary.

  10. *Participate in the employment of activity assistants, and periodically conducts an evaluation of their job performance.

  11. *Recruit, schedule and supervise volunteers.

  12. *Organize and schedule community events related to resident's interests.

  13. *Plan, schedule and implement room visits and in-room activities for residents unable to leave their room.

  14. *Review resident complaints and grievances and make necessary oral/written reports to the Administrator.

  15. Recommend to the Administrator equipment and supply needs of the department, and maintain an adequate supply of materials to implement activity program.

  16. *Report all incidents/accidents immediately according to facility policy.

  17. *Prepare and keep current an activity calendar, posting the calendar in conspicuous locations throughout the facility.

  18. *Be alert to any changes in residents' physical or behavioral condition and report to the nursing supervisor immediately.

  19. *Assist with planning and conducting Resident Council at least once each month.

  20. Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive interest, as well as a calm environment throughout the department.


21, Assist in arranging transportation for field trips and to other facilities when necessary.

  1. Coordinate activities with other departments as necessary, and seek assistance from other staff in planning and implementing facility-wide special events.

  2. *Assist bed residents by visiting with them, writing letters, running errands, etc., as needed.

  3. *Maintain an on-going record system that provides the information and documentation necessary to identify actions, activities, programs and services.

  4. *Works tactfully and cooperatively with resident, families, visitors, and other staff throughout the facility.

  5. Abides by department policies, practices, and standards of care.

  6. Properly uses and cares for equipment and supplies.

  7. Follows all safety, security, infection control, universal precautions, and hazardous materials policies and procedures. Performs all tasks to assure resident personal safety and the protection of co-workers and facility property.

  8. *Knows and ensures that all resident rights are maintained at all times. Reports any violations or suspected deviations according to facility property.


30, *Maintains confidentiality of all resident care information.



  1. *Changes work schedule or works overtime on occasion to meet the needs of the facility.

  2. Comes to work as scheduled and consistently demonstrates dependability and punctuality,

  3. Assists other staff members as needed within the limits of training and certification.

  4. Assumes responsibility and accountability for information contained in the Employee Information Booklet.

  5. Attend staff meetings, in-service classes, and committee meetings as assigned.

  6. Performs other related duties as directed by Administrator.
