Job Description - Director of After School Programs

Position Logistics



  • FLSA: Full-Time, Exempt 

  • Salary: $75,190 - $87,550 /annually DOE

  • Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 hours/day shifts, between the hours of 9am - 6pm.  There may be occasional work hours in the evening or weekend to meet agency needs or to attend events.

  • Work Location: Work will be primarily done from Camp Fire Alaska's main office, located 161 Klevin Street in Anchorage, AK as well as occasional work at all School Age Program & Summer Adventure Camp Locations (Anchorage & Eagle River). This position will have the option for a hybrid work schedule (after 90 days) that will adjust to meet supervisor and agency needs.

  • Reports to: Chief Operations Officer

  • Supervises: After School Program Manager, Manager of Compliance & Summer Adventure Camp Program Director

A day in the life:  


The Director of After School Programs begins each day reviewing enrollment, staffing, and key updates to anticipate needs and support teams across the various program locations. Much of the day is spent leading and mentoring program managers, collaborating with internal partners on budgeting, operations, and enrollment strategy, and using data to guide continuous improvement. Afternoons often include connecting with schools, community partners, and visiting program sites to ensure quality, safety, and consistency. Throughout the day, the Director balances strategic planning with hands-on problem-solving by addressing challenges, supporting staff, and keeping youth experience at the center of every decision so that Camp Fire Alaska’s after-school programs remain safe, engaging, and mission-driven.


No two days are ever exactly the same, but each day is grounded in strategic leadership, relationship-building, and a deep commitment to creating high-quality experiences where youth can discover the best in themselves and others.



To be successful in this role, the Director of After School Programs must combine strong leadership with strategic thinking and a deep commitment to youth development. Key skills include the ability to lead and coach diverse teams, communicate clearly across multiple levels of an organization, and build productive relationships with schools, families, and community partners. Strong organizational and time-management skills are essential for balancing competing priorities across multiple sites, while data literacy and financial awareness support informed decision-making and sustainable program growth. Just as important are sound judgment, emotional intelligence, and crisis-management abilities, which allow the Director to navigate challenges calmly and ensure that every decision reflects safety, equity, and the organization’s mission.



Qualifications:



  • Minimum: 5 years' experience working in program planning, implementation and working with youth (preferably school-age children) in a group and semi-structured setting 

  • Prior experience in the development and delivery of programs for youth

  • Successful experience as an administrator within a licensed or accredited program including experience going through a review from a regulatory entity, understanding of standards and regulations, and leading a continuous improvement process required 

  • Minimum: 5 years' experience supervision in a youth development and/or nonprofit agency required 

  • Minimum of twelve college credits (with at least 3 credit hours specific to early childhood education) in education, youth development or related filed OR Child Youth Care Credential (CYC) (can be acquired in first 18 months of hire)

  • Experience with training facilitation and on-boarding of new staff 

  • Ability to transport all program materials and supplies to site required; ability to visit all sites on demand 

  • Twenty-five (25) years of age required


Requirements: that can be acquired after hire within agreed upon time schedule 



  • Ability to obtain Current Adult/Child/Infant CPR, AED & First Aid certification from a nationally recognized provider, or the ability to obtain certification within 30 days of hire. (Camp Fire provides classes and paid training time) 

  • Ability to obtain State of Alaska's Office of Children's Services online Mandated Reporter training certificate ORability to obtain on-the-job  

  • Approved Health & Safety certificate ORability to obtain on-the-job  

  • Ability to obtain Food Worker Card certificate ORability to obtain on-the-job
