Job Description - Director of Afterschool and Summer Camp Programs

Description

GENERAL FUNCTION:

The Director of Afterschool and Summer Camp Programs is responsible for the planning, coordination, and supervision of all aspects of YMCA before and after school childcare programs for children in grades K–6 as well as summer camp. This role ensures a high-quality, developmentally appropriate program in accordance with YMCA standards, licensing regulations, and the mission and values of the YMCA.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate curriculum and activities that support the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of children in afterschool, out-of-school time, and summer camp programs.
  • Ensure the safety, supervision, and well-being of all children at all times.
  • Support counselors and/or teachers with lesson planning, behavior management, and parent communication.
  • Assist with staff recruitment, onboarding, required training, and performance management.
  • Ensure compliance with all state and YMCA licensing, health, and safety standards for children and staff.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records, including attendance, incident reports, licensing documentation, and billing information.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for families and school administrators.
  • Provide ongoing coaching, guidance, and support to program staff.
  • Manage and monitor the department budget.
  • Coordinate transportation services as needed.
  • Plan and oversee activities for fundraisers, special programs, and school events.
  • Support marketing and promotion of afterschool, out-of-school time, and summer camp programs.
  • Model and promote the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, and integrate these values into program activities and lesson planning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required.   • Bachelors degree and 2-3 years prior child care experience, or a combination of education and experience.
  • DCF required 45 hours.
  • CDA (Child Development Associate) preferred.
  • Current CPR & First Aid certification
  • State qualifications for child care personnel as required by position.
  • Maintains in-service hours as required by the state and position.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office database systems).
  • Strong supervisory/leadership skills and the ability to effectively discipline, counsel, and evaluate job performance.
  • Strong organizational skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and excellent customer service skills are strongly desired.
  • Ability to interact well with all levels of general public, members, staff and management.
  • Understanding and commitment to the National YMCA Mission and Goals

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists with the supervision of up to 10 or more staff members. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work, evaluating performance, rewarding and disciplining employees.

  • Frequently lifts, moves, and holds children with an average weight of 10-161bs.
  • Occasionally lifts or moves an average weight of 10 to 601bs in awkward or difficult positions.
  • On rare occasion lifts heavy weight (over 60 lbs.) in emergency situations.
  • Ability to physically and mentally react immediately to unexpected circumstances.
  • Required to stand up 95% of the workday.
  • Regularly stoops and bends.
  • Interacts with children on the playground or in the classroom and must regularly run, jump, dance, and do physical exercise.

Salary Description

$50k - $55k per year
