Director of AI & Automation

Location: Remote (U.S.)
Department: Technology & Innovation
Reports to: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) or Chief Operating Officer (COO)

About GT Independence:

GT Independence is a mission‑driven Financial Management Services (FMS) organization supporting more than 55,000 people across the United States in self‑directing their long‑term services and supports. We empower individuals with disabilities, older adults, and families to hire the caregivers they trust-while we manage payroll, taxes, billing, enrollment, and compliance across dozens of state programs.
Grounded in our core values-self‑determination, integrity, respect, community, and professionalism-we pair person‑centered service with innovative technology to make self‑direction simple, scalable, and secure nationwide.

Position Summary:

The Director of AI & Automation is a transformative technology leader responsible for shaping, implementing, and scaling GT’s enterprise‑wide AI, automation, and intelligent workflow strategy. This role blends technical depth with strategic vision—leveraging AI, machine learning, automation, and data‑driven insights to improve operational efficiency, enhance participant and caregiver experience, streamline compliance, and support GT’s rapid growth across multi‑state Medicaid programs.

This leader will build GT’s AI roadmap, drive automation initiatives across enrollment, payroll, customer support, finance, and compliance operations, and establish governance frameworks to ensure ethical, secure, and responsible use of AI in a regulated industry. The ideal candidate thrives in mission‑centric environments, understands the complexity of healthcare‑adjacent operations, and excels at delivering technology that creates measurable impact.

Key Responsibilities:

AI Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and execute GT’s enterprise AI and automation strategy to support scalable growth and operational excellence.

  • Identify high‑value AI use cases across the business (e.g., document processing, claims automation, predictive analytics, RPA, intelligent routing, chatbots, and compliance automation).

  • Build and manage a roadmap that accelerates automation adoption across the organization.

Automation & Intelligent Workflow Delivery

  • Lead cross‑functional automation initiatives using RPA, workflow orchestration, ML models, and intelligent document processing.

  • Partner with Operations, Enrollment, Customer Support, Payroll, and Compliance to re‑engineer processes and improve throughput, accuracy, and user experience.

  • Drive cloud‑based AI enablement in collaboration with Infrastructure, Data, and Security teams.

Data, Analytics & Machine Learning

  • Collaborate with Data & Analytics teams to leverage GT’s data for forecasting, anomaly detection, and insight generation.

  • Develop models that support predictive staffing, operational load forecasting, fraud detection, and state‑level program insights.

  • Ensure data quality, lineage, and integrity within AI‑powered processes.

Governance, Privacy & Ethical AI

  • Establish an AI governance framework to ensure responsible, compliant, and transparent use of AI technologies.

  • Partner with Legal, Security, and Compliance to align AI initiatives with HIPAA, state Medicaid requirements, SOC2 standards, and data privacy regulations.

  • Monitor emerging regulations and best practices to protect GT and its participants.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead a cross‑functional AI & Automation team-including automation engineers, data specialists, and vendor partners.

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to executive leadership on AI trends, risks, and opportunities.

  • Communicate technology initiatives in a clear, compelling manner to stakeholders at all levels.

Vendor, Platform & Technology Management

  • Evaluate and manage AI platforms, automation tools, and strategic technology partners.

  • Leverage enterprise platforms (e.g., Azure AI, Microsoft Copilot, RPA suites, intelligent OCR tools) to scale repeatable, secure, high‑value solutions.

  • Ensure value realization, efficiency gains, and measurable outcomes from vendor relationships.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • 7-10+ years of experience leading AI, automation, machine learning, or intelligent workflow initiatives.

  • Proven success delivering complex automation and AI solutions in a production environment.

  • Strong understanding of RPA, NLP, machine learning, intelligent document processing, and enterprise automation technologies.

  • Experience leading cross‑functional technology teams and managing large‑scale digital transformation initiatives.

  • Ability to translate business problems into AI‑powered solutions.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence non‑technical and executive audiences.

Preferred:

  • Experience in healthcare, Medicaid, FMS, government programs, or similarly regulated industries.

  • Familiarity with HIPAA, SOC2, state compliance standards, and secure data‑handling practices.

  • Background working with Azure AI, Copilot Studio, RPA platforms (UiPath, Automation Anywhere, Power Automate), and cloud‑based ML pipelines.

  • Experience building AI governance frameworks or ethical AI policies.

Core Competencies:

  • AI & Automation Strategy

  • Process Improvement & Innovation

  • Technical Leadership

  • Data‑Driven Decision Making

  • Regulatory Awareness

  • Change Management

  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration

  • Ethical & Responsible AI Thinking
