Job Description - Director of Curriculum & Instruction (12 Month)

Description

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction supports and advances the mission of FCS by working closely with the principals and superintendents to assure that the philosophy of Fredericksburg Christian School and the quality of instruction are maintained; helps assess the needs of the programs in each department, assists in the training of teachers and assistants as directed by the principals; works with individual teachers to strengthen skills; is actively involved in curriculum development and in-service training; reports to the Head of School.

  • Functions as an active member of the administrative team, keeping the Head of School and Principals informed of needs and activities related to curriculum and instruction
  • Provides instructional oversight in close partnership with principals:
  1. Serves in the orientation and training of new and returning teachers regarding curriculum
  2. Works with those teachers agreed upon by the administrative team and serves as a resource for teachers who seek help
  3. Assists with strengthening leadership roles of grade-level leaders and department heads
  4. Helps plan staff in-services and shares instructional recommendations at faculty meetings and in-services
  5. Develop and deliver professional development opportunities focused on curriculum delivery, teaching strategies, and instructional best practices.
  6. Coordinates ACSI and State Teacher Certification, including Continuing Education Units for staff. Leads ACSI reaccreditation efforts and works closely with the steering committee chair. 
  7. Checks teacher lesson plans for completion of curriculum and quality of instructional plans
  8. Gives feedback to principals about teacher strengths and weaknesses that may be included in teacher performance evaluations
  9. Coordinates Title funds with Spotsylvania School District; communicates opportunities to staff
  • Takes major role in Curriculum Development:
  1. Maintains continuity and quality of written curriculum
  2. Plans and implements regular curriculum reviews
  3. Works with the Resource Center Coordinator and administrative team to plan programs for students with special learning needs, including programs designed to challenge strong students; evaluates the Resource Center Coordinator and provides support for this program
  4. Ensures that the media center teacher keeps current all ACSI Teacher Certification materials
  5. Visits other schools to observe programs FCS is currently using and new programs under consideration
  6. Keeps abreast of current trends in curriculum and instruction; researches curriculum approaches and materials to help establish the strongest curriculum for FCS
  7. Helps create methods for making current curriculum more teacher and student-friendly
  8. Encourages communication between buildings and departments for better sequencing of instruction
  9. Assists teachers with scope and sequence, curriculum writing, and lesson plans as needed
  10. Coordinates ordering, distribution, and inventory of standardized testing materials for Grades 1-9
  11. Studies results of standardized testing to evaluate and set goals for improvement in FCS’ curriculum and instruction
  12. Works with principals to establish and conduct an effective program of professional development for the teachers
  13. Assists with and at times coordinates ACSI activities for students
  14. Assists principals in coordinating grading guidelines and gradebook setup
  15. Assists with textbook inventory and ordering decisions

Requirements

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction should have the following qualifications:

  1. Committed Christian with a close personal walk with the Lord, maintained through personal routines (such as prayer and reading the Bible) and in the school setting (through regular participation in “Prayer and Share” devotional times and other spiritual development opportunities at the school) (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
  2. Possesses Christian character qualities to serve as a role model for young people and readiness to share faith in Christ with students as part of our school’s mission (1 Timothy 4:12)
  3. Regular in attendance at an evangelical Protestant, Bible-believing church, whose fundamental beliefs are not contrary to the FCS Statement of Faith (Hebrews 10:25)
  4. Commitment to a Biblical lifestyle, not promoting or engaging in actions, beliefs, or lifestyles contrary to biblical standards, such as premarital, extramarital, transgender, or homosexual behavior (Romans 12:1-2, I Corinthians 6:9-20, Ephesians 4:1-11, 5:3-5, I Thessalonians 4:3-8, I Timothy 4:12, II Timothy 2:19-22, I Peter 1:15-16, 2:15-17, I John 3:1-3)
  5. If married, a solid commitment based on Mark 10:9 and positive marital relationship
  6. Strong commitment to Christian education
  7. Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, School Administration or a related field and broad classroom experience
  8. Minimum 3 years of experience in curriculum design or management, with demonstrated work spanning multiple grade levels or school-wide curriculum initiatives, preferably in a Christian school environment
  9. Committed to keeping ACSI or state certification current according to FCS guidelines
  10. Understanding of the spiritual, emotional, social, physical, and academic needs of young people
  11. Knowledge of newest learning trends and ability to incorporate these to reach broad range of learners and learning profiles
  12. Ability to communicate clearly and sensitively with students, staff, and parents 
  13. Ability to inspire and motivate teachers and to encourage their growth as Christian professionals and their leadership instructionally
  14. Teachable, servant spirit
