Job Description - Director of Development and Donor Relations (Major and Planned Gifts)

Description

Hospice of the Piedmont is a mission-driven organization offering flexibility and a team-based work environment with a supportive management team. We are seeking a Director of Development and Donor Relations to lead our Development team in building strong philanthropic relationships and implementing fundraising strategies. This role involves working with the CEO and Senior Leadership in establishing fundraising goals and objectives. The Director of Development and Donor Relations will partner with Marketing and Communications on donor communications and public-facing events. 

Responsibilities:

1. Fundraising (75% of time)

  • Manages a portfolio of 100+ major and planned gift prospects and develops individual goals and plans for each donor to fulfill the donor’s interests and passions to increase financial support for HOP.  
  • Assists with the qualification and cultivation of major gift prospects ($10,000+) to HOP through personal visits and high-level hosted gatherings.  
  • Works with the Development team and program directors/staff to secure project information for creating proposals for support, fundraising case statements, and funding menus to inspire and facilitate donors’ support of HOP.  
  • Develops and executes strategic stewardship plans for individuals and select foundation donors, working with program staff to report to donors on how their giving made a difference.  
  • Responsible for the overall strategy, cultivation, and stewardship of the Legacy Society of planned giving donors to Hospice of the Piedmont.  
  • Works in collaboration with Marketing and Communications on donor communications, materials, and public-facing events to align messaging and campaigns. 
  • Works in collaboration with the CEO and Board of Directors on overall fundraising strategy to support Hospice of the Piedmont’s mission, programs, and long-term sustainability.   
  • Leads the Development Committee of the Board of Directors.   
  • With the support of the Development team, captures pertinent information on donors and prospects in Raiser’s Edge to document, enhance, and steward relationships.  
  • Represents the organization and its mission-supported programs at events and meetings in the community.  
  • Other duties that help to support the mission as assigned.  

2. Leadership of Development Team (25% of time) 

  • Oversees day-to-day operations of the team to ensure efficient processes aligned with best practices.   
  • Creates and manages department budget, goals, and key performance indicators (KPIs).  
  • Leads, mentors, and manages a team of development professionals, fostering a high-performance team culture.  
  • Works to create a culture of philanthropy across the entire Hospice of the Piedmont team.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.    
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE), preferred.
  • Senior development professional with a minimum of five years of experience in major gift fundraising and planned giving, with a proven track record of closing six-figure solicitations.     

Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to work autonomously and manage multiple projects on a timely basis.
  • Strong organizational, relationship management, and must be result-driven.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.   
  • Familiarity with relational databases such as Blackbaud. 
  • Raiser's Edge and Wealth Engine are desirable.
  • A strong knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of programs.
