Job Description - Director of Emergency Department

Hours: 1st shift, days will vary  | Supervisory Responsibilities | No Travel | Pay commensurate with experience


 


Full Time, day shift in the Emergency Room.  ***Eligible for a $10,000 Commitment Bonus.



JOB SUMMARY:


Our Nursing team member’s primary goal is to provide the most remarkable patient experience while providing professional nursing services and patient care in the Emergency Department. The requirements of the ED Director, in addition to the staff RN expectations, are for him/her to have expertise in the following areas; leadership, education, financial and the ability to develop and implement policies.



MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:



Experience:



  • Recent Emergency Department Experience preferred.

  • 5 years of previous clinical practice.

  • 3 years of management experience in Nursing preferred.


 


License/Certifications:


         BSN Preferred, but not required



  • Must be licensed a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of NC.

  • Current CPR Certification. 

  • ACLS certification obtained during orientation period.

  • PALS certification obtained during orientation period.

  • TNCC Certification preferred.

  • Advanced Emergency Department Certification preferred.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:



The ED Nurse Director provides direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities of the RN include, (but are not limited to):



  1. Keeps up to date on current relevant ED Nursing practices. 

  2. Assigns and coordinated nursing duties. 

  3. Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological and spiritual support to patients, families, friends, and staff.

  4. Observes, supervises and evaluates nursing care.

  5. Rounds on patients to ensure remarkable nursing care is being provided.

  6. Associated with Quality Improvement activities and reports finding to the appropriate committee.

  7. Evaluates current nursing practice and patient care delivery models to improve quality and efficiency of care.

  8. Implements an effective, continuing QI program to measure, access, and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients by striving for a 95% patient satisfaction score.

  9. Evaluates educational needs of staff and correlates these needs through inservice or educational opportunities.

  10. Schedules staff according to patient census and needs within the department.

  11. Collaborates with Nursing Leadership Council to develop goals for Nursing services.

  12. Attends at least 80% of NLC meetings.

  13. Participates in the development of budgets, resource allocation and operational plans in relation to the hospital's mission and strategic plan.

  14. Monitors and controls budgets.

  15. Evaluates department for capital equipment needs and makes recommendations as to the purchase of Items during the budget process.

  16. Handles interpersonal relationships with nursing personnel in a way to enhance labor relations among staff.

  17. Establishes nursing policies and procedures, nursing standards of patient care, and practice, and standards to measure, assess and improve patient outcomes.

  18. Makes decisions in matters requiring prompt attention. Carefully considers alternatives before making those decisions.

  19. Keeps Senior Leader informed of department development and outcomes of problem resolution.

  20. Reports patient concerns/complaints to Senior Leader and Patient Advocate. 

  21. Attends required meetings regularly: Department Managers, Safety, etc.

  22. Understands and submits correct forms for ordering equipment/supplies/education/expense reimbursement/occurrence reporting.

  23. Reviews department policies at least annually and updates as needed.

  24. Completes employee evaluations within established time frame.

  25. Counsels subordinate regularly about his/her performance. Completes appropriate forms according to 

  26. Follows the steps of the Hiring/Termination process.

  27. Conducts staff meeting regularly and maintains minutes.

  28. Submits payroll accurately via Kronos System before deadline.

  29. Submits itinerary to Senior Leader weekly on Fridays.

  30. Completes annual employment requirements.

  31. Maintains regulatory requirements: Renews License/Certifications/CPR.

  32. Adheres to Attendance Policy.

  33. Communicates effectively with others, works together as a team.



Must be willing to receive all required vaccinations (i.e., flu shot, etc.). All new employees working must be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment (unless the new hire has requested and received an exemption). After receiving an offer of employment, new employees must provide proof of vaccination or request and receive an exemption before beginning work.
