Title: Director of Events

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

Job Description

I. Organizational Overview

Philadelphia Youth Basketball, Inc. (PYB), officially launched in June of 2015, is a community-built youth development and community empowerment organization that leverages the iconic game of basketball to help today’s urban youth overcome the most urgent and systemic issues facing underserved communities. A diverse and impassioned group of individuals, including leaders from the grass-roots to the tree-tops, have been working diligently to execute this mission by building an impactful program, a robust and sustainable organization, and ultimately our world-class Sixth Man Center to help uplift thousands of children, youth, and families for generations to come.

PYB aims to instill six key tenets of its community agreement principles from top to bottom across its organization and young people:

  • Safe Space - It is our responsibility to create a judgment-free environment where everyone feels welcome.
  • Trust - We deeply believe in each other and will work to form positive relationships.
  • Respect - We will honor each individual and treat everyone with a high level of respect. We strive to treat others how they want to be treated and ask for the same in return.
  • Integrity - We strive to create an environment where honesty and equity are valued and we have a responsibility to restore relationships when necessary.
  • Care - We strive to be empathetic in protecting the health and welfare of each other and our space.
  • Teamwork - We find strength in our peers and strive to create an environment that honors all of our roles on a team.

The PYB Team will be working diligently to ensure that this 100,000-square-foot youth development and community empowerment Center is fully optimized during peak and off-peak hours to drive social impact and generate operating revenues for cost coverage purposes.  Our business model, comprised of almost exclusively contributed revenue from private philanthropy and a smaller amount from public sector sources, will be transformed into approximately 50% contributed and 50% earned revenue once the Center is operational.  Of the earned revenue, approximately half, or $1,500,000 - $1,750,000, will come from facility rentals as opposed to income-sensitive program fees. The facility rentals will include basketball tournaments, showcase games, adult leagues, and team camps, as well as non-basketball usage for events such as conferences, corporate retreats, school graduations, weddings and engagement parties, family reunions, mitzvahs, craft shows, and an occasional non-profit gala that is not our own.  The Director of Basketball Operations? will lead the securing of basketball-related events, while the Director of Events will lead the non-basketball events.

II.Primary Scope of Duties

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the primary responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop an outreach and intake plan and system for the sales and marketing of event-based hosting in our Center
  • Build and maintain relationships with organizations, companies, and individuals who could utilize our services.
  • Collaborate with our Operations Team to ensure that all logistics, including contracts, payment, setup, breakdown, AV equipment, security, and other needs, are properly attended to for all non-basketball events.
  • Work with our Development Team to identify and explore potential synergies to support PYB beyond the event-hosting experience and collaborate to develop promotional materials to attract new customers.
  • Maintain a database with preferred vendors, and schedule of events and serve as the point of contact with the PYB team on relevant event information.
  • Ensure that all event clients and their event planners, when applicable receive the highest level of service before, during, and after the events
  • Represent the mission of PYB, beyond the facility usage opportunities, with clarity and purpose

III.  Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions

  • At least 3 years of professional experience with event planning or hosting
  • Strong analytical and communication skills, both written and verbally
  • Highly motivated to meet and exceed sales and revenue goals
  • A quality team player who appreciated both the mission and business objectives of PYB

IV. Compensation and Perks

This position will have a salary range of $70,000-$80,000 commensurate with experience.

PYB prides itself on being a supportive workplace dedicated to employees’ personal and professional growth through stretch assignments, access to staff and board meetings, mentorship, feedback, and professional development opportunities.

Company benefits include access to health insurance coverage (medical and dental) for salaried employees and their families.  Additional benefits include paid holidays, paid time off, and access to a 403(b) retirement plan.

V. To Apply

Applicants should submit a cover note and resume by no later than May 5, 2024.
