Job Description - Director of Facilities Management

Director of Facilities Operations

Hobart and William Smith University is seeking an experienced Director of Facilities Operations to lead our integrated facilities management (IFM) team. This is a hands-on leadership role overseeing physical plant, custodial, grounds, and construction operations in a single-campus environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Direct day-to-day facilities operations, including preventive maintenance, reactive repairs, and trades management (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, utilities).
  • Manage an annual operating budget up to $9M, ensuring financial controls, forecasting, and cost optimization.
  • Lead construction and capital projects, delivering on time, on budget, and aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Supervise and mentor frontline staff and union teams, fostering a safe, efficient, and compliant work environment.
  • Build trusted relationships with C-suite executives, clients, and frontline teams, influencing strategic and technical decisions.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of management experience leading facilities or operations teams in a complex environment.
  • Proven experience in integrated facilities management (IFM): physical plant, custodial, grounds, and construction.
  • Demonstrated success managing multi-million-dollar operating and capital budgets.
  • Strong leadership, relationship-building, and communication skills with executive stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Higher education, research, or healthcare campus experience.
  • Familiarity with union workforce supervision, regional vendors, and building codes.
  • Experience integrating hard and soft services across multiple service lines.
