Job Description - Director of Farm Programs Cultivate KC

Hours:

Full-time, 40 hours per week

Mon-Fri, occasional evening or weekend work, as needed

Rate : $70,000-$80,000 annually, dependent upon experience; health benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, life and long-term disability insurance; four PTO days usable at start, two weeks of vacation accrued during first year, increases to three weeks at year two, plus holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year’s.

Position Summary:

The Director of Farm Programs is responsible for overseeing program delivery and managing grant deliverables at Cultivate KC’s three farm sites: the Juniper Gardens Training Farm, the Westport Commons Farm, and the forthcoming farm to be developed in western Wyandotte County. This position will also assist the Executive Director, leadership team and members of the Board of Directors in helping to evaluate the effectiveness of Cultivate KC’s farm-based programming and oversee future expansion.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Serve on the staff Leadership Team (currently staffed by the Executive Director, the Assistant Director of Strategy and Partnership, and the Director of Finance and Administration) by providing analysis and developing actions on key issues, providing reports to the Board of Directors, and supporting the Executive Director on high level policies, issues, and concerns as needed.

Supervise farm program staff (Westport Commons Farm Program Manager, Juniper Gardens Training Farm Program Manager, and future staff at the western Wyandotte County farm.)

In collaboration with farm program managers, develop and manage annual farm program budgets and grant budgets.

Manage existing farm program grant reporting and assist program managers with workflow and timeline management of grant deliverables.

With finance team, support monthly grant invoicing and other financial grant reporting efforts.

Work closely with farm program staff, stakeholders, and partners to carry out existing projects and inform development of any new programming.

Working with the ED and other program staff, identify land for future western Wyandotte County farm site and develop rules and policies for governing land leases and shared infrastructure onsite.

Act as staff liaison to the board-level Program Committee.

Participate in fund development activities, including the preparation of proposals for grants and other funding sources.

Participate in other organizational committees as assigned/volunteered for.

Other duties as assigned.

Placement Criteria

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

At least 5 years of relevant experience in farm or food-systems based non-profit program management;

Experience with agricultural production practices and/or farm business management;

Familiarity/experience with the KC metro area urban farming environment;

Familiarity/experience with USDA ecosystem, including programs and grants;

Experience developing and implementing strategic plans;

Knowledge about organic farming and sustainable agriculture practices;

Experience with project, grant, budget and personnel management;

Experience writing grants (preferred);

The ability to consistently meet deadlines and motivate others to do so in a collaborative environment;

The ability to self-direct and complete tasks with minimal day-to-day supervision;

The ability to work will with others and demonstrate effective listening;

Strong interpersonal skills; and

A high-level attention to detail.

Physical Demands

This job will present occasional opportunities to participate in farm work including activities such as walking, standing, reaching, stooping, squatting, lifting up to 50 lbs and working indoors and outdoors in cold, hot or wet conditions. Ability to navigate rugged and uneven farm terrain is required.

Work Location

This is a hybrid position, with office space available at 300 E. 39th St, Kansas City, MO 64111 and 1017 N. 6th St, Kansas City, KS 66101. Some work can be done remotely; guidance will be provided after hiring.
