The Director of Radiology Services is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and controlling the administrative and clinical activities of the Radiology department. Ensures quality control and compliance with regulatory requirements. The position requires availability or delegated availability to respond after working hours.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Oversee all aspects of the radiology department, including staff management and productivity, training, equipment, and daily operations
Promote communication and cooperation among departments to create a spirit of unity in the organization.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Work with Hospital administration on planning, organizing, and directing Imaging Services operations and ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations
Work collaboratively with the radiologists to discuss service quality, coordinate activities, and provide appropriate patient care
Assure that the department operates in accordance with standards established by the hospital, regulatory, state, and federal standards.
Initiate and actuate improved methods of imaging services and direct their implementation
Prepare department budgets for personnel, operating expenses, and capital equipment. Responsible for fiscal operation of the department
Consult other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities
Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors
Delegate authority and responsibility to the Imaging Services personnel as appropriate
Provide care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including pediatric, geriatric, and general population within the scope of the credential
Prepare, maintain, and submit department reports as needed
Apprise hospital administration of innovation in techniques and equipment. Participate in the development of and/or develop long/short range plans regarding equipment and utilization. Recommend equipment modifications, new equipment, and essential construction within the department
Monitor department productivity to ensure appropriate efficiency of departmental operations
Maintain existing equipment in operating order and obtain contractual maintenance services as required
Ensure adequate supplies to perform imaging services
Schedule staff to ensure department is covered on a 24-hour basis to include covering shifts in the absence of staff
Coordinate and provide direct patient care in a timely effective manner in collaboration with other healthcare team members. Operate radiology equipment to make clinical diagnostic images as directed by the physicians and perform routine diagnostic procedures to facilitate the highest quality of patient care
Document timely and accurately in the Electronic Medical Record
Ensure the continuing education and credentialing requirements are current for all imaging staff
Make daily rounds in Imaging Services to judge effectiveness of operation, utilization of personnel and supplies, and general ethical and professional atmosphere
Participate in hospital/medical staff committee meetings as required
Ensure a strategic approach to human resources management: recruiting, training, employee relations, performance management, and compliance to maximize employee productivity and meet organizational goals
Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise
Provide exemplary customer service
Maintain confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA
Cooperate with other personnel to achieve departmental objectives and maintain good employee relations, inter-departmental objectives, and infection control policies
Cordially demonstrate timeliness and professionalism in appearance, communications, and actions during all interactions and with all individuals and entities
Solve practical problems, dealing with a variety of issues, and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written and oral form
Attend meetings as required
Perform other related duties to benefit the mission of the organization.
Requirements
Required Skills/Abilities:
Blend of leadership, managerial, technical, and communication skills to effectively oversee a radiology department
Expertise in regulatory compliance
Comprehensive understanding of various imaging modalities (X-ray, CT, MRI, ultrasound, mammography, nuclear medicine, etc.)
Understanding and adhering to radiation safety protocols and regulations
Implementing and maintaining quality assurance programs to ensure accurate and reliable imaging services
Proficiency in using Electronic Medical Records and other computer applications relevant to radiology
Strong verbal and written communication skills, particularly the ability to communicate as a leader.
Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including but not limited to: Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint, payroll and accounting systems, and email.
Excellent command of / highly proficient in spoken and written English.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree required or high School diploma with 8 years direct experience
Three years of managerial experience in a radiology or healthcare setting
ARRT, ARDMS, or NMTCB certification required; multiple modalities preferred
Licensure through Texas Medical Board
American Heart BLS
Physical and Mental Requirements:
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
Must be able to navigate various departments of the organization’s physical premises.
Sufficient hearing, vision, and dexterity to perform duties safely.
Stress Level: Moderate to High
OSHA Classification:
Category II: Tasks that involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, but employment may require performing unplanned Category I tasks.
The normal work routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues, but exposure may be required as a condition of employment. Appropriate protective measures, such as gloves, masks, goggles, and gown, are readily available to every employee engaged in Category II tasks.
