Oversees and directs the entire inpatient nursing department. This role involves managing staff, developing policies, implementing new programs and collaborating with other departments to optimize patient care. Under supervision of a higher level professional nurse, incumbents of this position assist in the clinical management of patients using accepted nursing practice such as the diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual and potential health problems through such services as case findings, health counseling and provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being. Supervision is exercised over professional nurses, LPNs, aides and clerical support staff, which include practical training and staff development. Works independently in a supervisory role and is responsible for supervision for the assigned department(s). Responsible for completing performance evaluations and disciplinary issues for assigned staff members, with the Chief Nursing Officer.
Assists in the coordination, assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of the nursing regiment for patients within a nursing unit in collaboration with Rehabilitation department. Identifies appropriate nursing resources in developing appropriate nursing care plans for specific patients. Participates in the definition, maintenance and interpretation of standards of practice. Provides care bases on current principles of nursing research, evidenced based practice and performance improvement.
Participates in the coordination and implementation of nursing rounds. Provides direct patient care to compliment of patients in the assigned area. In addition, oversees charge duties and preceptor duties. Reports to Chief Nursing Officer.
Participates in multi-disciplinary team approach to patient care and quality assurance activities. Participates in performance improvement activities; patient safety activities; assists in maintaining compliance with DOH accreditation and other internal and external regulatory standards including code of conduct.
Manages staffing levels, schedules and workflow ensuring adequate coverage and efficient operations.
Strong understanding of skilled nursing standards of care including sub-acute rehabilitation.
Implements and participates in staff development activities with Clinical I.T. Nurse and Clinical Educator.
Participates in the supervision and evaluation of professional and non-professional staff performance, including performance evaluations and disciplinary issues.
Develops and assists in the implementation of nursing policies and procedures, and interprets them and educates assigned staff.
Participates in committees as assigned.
Review applications, interview and participate in hiring process of nursing staff.
Manages patient complaints with a focus on patient safety and satisfaction.
Leads, oversees and assists in wound rounds.

Requirements
Education:
BSN Degree in Nursing
Professional License to practice Nursing in New York State
Experience:
Five (5) years or more as a practicing Registered Nurse in a similar setting.
knowledge of general nursing theory, standards and practices. Communicates effectively with members of the health care team, patients and families, often under stress or in emergency situations. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to read, interpret and follow detailed oral, written and illustrated instruction. Knowledge of a wide variety of medical equipment and instruments; computer skills preferred. Exercises informed judgment, acts competently, assumes responsibility and accountability for patient care. Maintains professional competency through continuing education licensure and professional activities. Demonstrates professional conduct and appearance, and is accountable for actions and outcomes.
