Director of Nuclear Safety and Regulatory Research Division

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Director of Nuclear Safety and Regulatory Research Division to work in our Nuclear Science and Technology Directorate. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our REC facility with every other Friday off. You will report to the NS&T Associate Laboratory Director (ALD).

The mission of the NSRR Division is to lead the world in research and development for the safe and sustainable use of engineered systems in many domains, with an emphasis on nuclear energy. This is accomplished by solving impactful issues in regulatory research, risk, reliability, and operational performance. Specifically, NSRR focuses on energy, transportation, and critical infrastructure research and development for science-based solutions to sustain and expand the commercial nuclear reactor fleet; ensure deployment and licensing of advanced nuclear reactors; perform fundamental research into human-system interactions; and facilitate enhanced operational approaches and analysis for complex systems.

Responsibilities Include:

* As the leader of the NSRR Division, the Director plays an essential role in the INL's efforts to challenge conventional approaches to nuclear energy research, attract and develop talent, and lead the deployment of new risk, reliability, and operability technologies.

* You will oversee the formulation and communication of a compelling vision, internal and external relationship engagement, management direction, business development, staff development of the division strategy, and leadership to focus and integrate the six NSRR Division departments (Regulatory Support; Data Science & Applied Statistics; Reliability, Risk, and Resilience Sciences; Human Factors and Reliability; Risk Phenomena Modeling; Automation, Instrumentation, and Controls) toward science and technology goals consistent with the INL's strategy, existing programmatic missions, and latest opportunities.

* Responsible for the direction and management of programmatic leaders providing direct support to sponsoring organizations, including the Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE), the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and private industry.

* It is imperative that the Director collaborate with leaders across the laboratory to ensure the execution of the INL's strategy and to meet programmatic partner needs, within the NS&T, other INL directorates including Energy and Environment Science & Technology and the National and Homeland Security (NHS) Directorates, and with the INL's mission helping organizations to use the full resources of the laboratory and those of our partners to achieve our mission.

* You will manage a group of a growing organization of scientists, engineers, technical, and support staff.

* As a leader in the NS&T Directorate, the Director creates a culture of collaboration, innovation, inclusion, and diversity with a focus toward the professional development of staff.

Minimum Requirements:

* Advanced Degree (MS or PhD degree) in nuclear science and engineering, mechanical engineering, data science, computer science, human factors, instrumentation and control, or a related discipline with at least 10 years of management experience in a nuclear-related R&D organizations and programs.

* Experience in nuclear reactor regulatory research, regulation development, and engagement preferable for both existing and advanced reactors.

* Demonstrated leadership and business management skills with a proven track record of accomplishments through delivery of sponsor's programmatic requirements, publications, awards, professional recognition, and development of a nuclear-related R&D strategy.

* Experience developing a healthy, positive, and inclusive work environment that promotes and enhances discovery and new ideas.

* Record of establishing collaborations across organizations and a record of successful interactions with DOE, Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other government organizations and programs and industry partners.

* This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Job Information:

* The target pay range for this position is $156,88.00 - $224,273.00. The full pay range is $121,920.00 - $316,992.00. At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials* You are required to show a demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.

* TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
