Director of Nursing

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Director of Nursing will be responsible for the daily supervision of the nursing, laboratory, medical, radiology and referral staff, including all relative administration duties. The Director of Nursing will supervise and coordinate activities of the staff to ensure that the patients receive proper care and that the provider's orders are executed appropriately. Will coordinate, complete and integrate quality assurance, risk management and reporting duties. Reports directly to the Medical Services Director.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs daily supervision of nurses, laboratory, medical, radiology and referral staff. Evaluates performance and initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions.


2. Trains, orients and assigns all staff under supervision. Performs all duties of supervised staff in the case of an acute staff shortage.


3. Develops, updates, implements and maintains appropriate policies and procedures and helps to develop goals and objectives for the Medical Units in conjunction with the overall SNHS planning efforts.


4. Completes all required management reports and coordinates program compliance with tribal, local, state and federal regulations.


5. Advises and assists health system staff in development of indicators of quality and monitoring functions for CQI committee. Collects and organizes data and helps prepare status reports on quality care for presentation at CQI committee and medical staff meetings.


6. Assist in the establishment and implementation of interdisciplinary quality improvement teams and helps staff to understand and utilize the concepts of CQI by conducting periodic in-services related to quality improvement and risk management.


7. Coordinates infection control programs within the SNHS


8. Assists in the preparation of the annual medical unit budget process.


9. Encourages staff development and professional growth.


10. Maintains administrative authority, responsibility and accountability for the proper charting, documentation of care and of the medications and treatment by nurses.


11. Manages and oversees employee health for the SNHS.


12. Attends all mandatory staff meetings and in-services.


13. Follow all policies of the SNHS.


14. Leads nursing staff in delivering excellent care to the patients and offering quality support to the medical staff.


15. Ensures that each nurse on staff is properly certified and abides by the standards of care established by the SNHS and state and federal laws.


16. Oversees nurses, laboratory, medical, radiology and referral staff at CTHC and LRJHC.


17. Maintains patient files according to program guidelines and the Privacy Act of 1974.


18. Maintains a neat and orderly work area.


19. Assist with any necessary areas within the Department.


20. Facilitate and promote PCMH policies and guidelines with providers and nurses.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Must have a current New York State Registered Nurse license. Minimum of three (3) years nursing experience and two (2) years supervisory experience required. Background related to quality improvement activities required. Strong interpersonal skills and self-motivation required. Must be able to interact with providers, nurses, other staff, patients and family members.

Must pass a pre-employment drug screen in accordance with the Drug, Alcohol and Controlled Substance Abuse policy. Background check may also be required.
