Job Description - Director of Operations (MFG)

The Director of Operations (MFG) is responsible for directing, organizing, and monitoring the operational activities associated with the company's manufacturing operations. The individual in this position will develop and sustain systems and processes necessary to ensure efficiency and timeliness to meet production requirements and needs of customers in a safe, quality oriented, and cost-effective manner. This person must exhibit exceptional leadership, organizational, and communication skills, solid project management and people skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To Perform this job successfully, and individual must be able to perform each essential function.
Assist in the development and formulation of long and short-range planning, policies, programs, and objectives.
Develop plan(s) and establish procedures for maintaining top quality operations ensuring that products meet or exceed established customer and company quality standards while maintaining a constant focus on efforts to improve performance, customer service, quality, safety, and efficiency.
Optimize staffing levels, minimizing overhead costs, and managing within annual budgetary plan.
Formulate and recommend policies and programs that guide the organization in maintaining and improving its competitive position and the profitability of the operation. Recommend changes in other areas which would be expected to result in a more efficient operation.
Direct and monitor plant managers' efforts to accomplish goals consistent with established manufacturing, distribution, and safety procedures. Act as liaison between subordinate levels as well as between subordinates and executive manager levels to inform team members of communications, decisions, policies, and all matters that affect their performance, attitudes, and results.
Identify, recommend, and implement changes to improve productivity, reduce cost, and reduce or eliminate scrap. Direct the establishment, implementation, and maintenance of production standards.
Exhibit a professional manner, maintaining constructive working relationships.
Stay current on relevant manufacturing information and technology to increase innovation and ensure regulatory compliance.
Use independent judgment to assign team member work duties to meet operational requirements. Make sure that team members and co-workers have the information needed to perform their job duties.
Lead and coach team members. Establish performance expectations for team members and provide regular feedback and performance reviews to ensure that team members understand how their job duties support the company's mission and have the right tools/resources to do their jobs well.
Investigate complaints and performance concerns and implement disciplinary action, up to and including termination, as needed and in compliance with company procedures and with consultation with the human resources department.
Work with human resources department to manage hiring process for direct reports; interview and select candidates for hire in compliance with company processes.
Maintain an open and candid working relationship with immediate supervisor/manager in discussing matters of importance.
Continually evaluate processes, make recommendations, and implement improvements to optimize efficiency. Establish and document standard operating procedures and ensure the team is adhering to them. Drive continuous improvement efforts to reduce costs or increase productivity without reducing effectiveness.
Effectively apply lean manufacturing tools and methodology to lead team in continuous improvement activities.
Adhere to established company values, practices, policies, and procedures at all times. Follow and support compliance with all applicable safety rules, laws, regulations, and standards. Use independent judgment to ensure that team members follow company policy and maintain a safe work environment by encouraging safe practices and promptly resolving violations, including initiating rewards and discipline as needed.
Demonstrate regular and punctual attendance at the assigned work location.
Travel required up to 50-75% of the time.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

An individual qualified for this job must be able to:
Read and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
Work with mathematical concepts to solve complex problems and to develop practical solutions.
Demonstrate an understanding of business administration.
Demonstrate advanced knowledge of production and manufacturing operations.
Organize, assign, schedule, manage and report on the work of team of associates.

Efficiently operate a computer and demonstrate PC proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Effectively and professionally communicate with co-workers, team members, and internal or external customers. Present information clearly and accurately.
Pay attention to details and pursue quality in accomplishing work duties and tasks. Look for opportunities to reduce costs or increase productivity without reducing effectiveness.
Handle challenges skillfully, thoroughly, and effectively.
Independently take advantage of opportunities to improve or increase skills, abilities, and job knowledge.
Make sure that work is delivered on time and of high quality.
Develop good work practices in order to get the job done.
Use equipment, resources, and time in an efficient and effective manner.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND CERTIFICATIONS

An individual qualified for this job must have and maintain the following qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in industrial, mechanical, or chemical engineering or a 4-year technical degree in related discipline; or any satisfactory combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the above duties.
Minimum 15 years' experience in operations management, preferably in a process-oriented operation, and/or a related industry.
10+ years' experience managing a significant segment or a large manufacturer or the entire operation of a small manufacturer. Some of this experience should be in a lean or six-sigma manufacturing environment.
Experience working with manufacturing-based technology, processes and principles preferred.
Must successfully complete training on the company's enterprise resource planning (ERP).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the Essential Functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
This is a desk-based job and will require the individual to remain seated for long periods of time and have the manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment such as computer keyboard, mouse, calculator, phone, copier/scanner, and similar machines.
Must be able to move about all company locations, including industrial manufacturing and distribution facilities, while working with team members in a manufacturing or distribution facilities.
Travel to multiple locations up to 75% of the time.
ENVIROMENTAL CONDITIONS

The environmental conditions described here are representative of those the associate encounters while performing the Essential Functions of the job.
The individual will work remotely when not traveling for business.
While working with team members at manufacturing and distribution facilities, the individual may be exposed to moving machinery, work in high/precarious places, marked changes in temperature and humidity, and dust, odors and fumes. Typical noise level is loud.
