Position Summary



The Director of Parks Department is the senior management position for the Parks Department under the general supervision of the Chairman. The Director provides executive leadership and administrative oversight for the planning, development, operation, and maintenance of tribal parks, recreational facilities, and open spaces. This position is responsible for ensuring that parks and recreation services support the Tribe’s cultural values, community well-being, environmental stewardship, and long-term strategic goals. The Director works closely with Tribal Council, administration, and community stakeholders to protect and enhance tribal lands while providing safe, accessible, and culturally respectful recreational opportunities.



Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities




  • Provides overall leadership, direction, and management of the Tribal Parks Department and duties of department staff, including parks, trails, recreational facilities, and open spaces. Schedules and monitors department staff and workloads to ensure completion within established procedures and timelines.

  • Develops and implements departmental goals, objectives, procedures, and long-range plans consistent with Tribal Council priorities and tribal sovereignty. Develops or revises work practices and procedures to ensure efficiency.

  • Oversees departmental budgeting, financial management, and procurement in accordance with tribal policies and applicable regulations

  • Directs the maintenance, operation, and improvement of tribal parks and facilities to ensure safety, cleanliness, accessibility, and environmental sustainability

  • Plans, manages, and/or oversees capital improvement and/or infrastructure projects related to parks and recreation facilities. Oversight of proper documentation and duties.

  • Supervises, hires, trains, evaluates, and disciplines department staff; promotes professional development and accountability and provides appropriate direction. Provides a high level of leadership; conduct performance evaluations; implement discipline procedures; maintain discipline and high standards for efficient and professional operations of the Department; processes employee concerns and problems; directs work.

  • Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and tribal laws, regulations, and safety standards

  • Works collaboratively with other tribal departments, federal agencies, community organizations, and external partners; attends meetings as needed. Represents the Parks Department at Tribal Council meetings, community meetings, and intergovernmental forums. Prepares reports, presentations, and recommendations for Tribal Administration and Tribal Council as needed

  • Engages with tribal members and the community to assess needs, address concerns, and enhance recreational programming and services



Minimum Qualifications



  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in parks, recreation, facilities management, or a related field, including supervisory experience

  • Demonstrated experience in budget development, funds management, staff supervision, and program or facilities oversight

  • Knowledge of park operations, maintenance practices, safety standards, and environmental stewardship principles

  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Associate’s degree or higher; or equivalent Work History in Parks and Recreation Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, Natural Resources, Environmental Management, or a related field preferred

  • Experience or knowledge of tribal governance structures and cultural protocols

  • Relevant professional certification (e.g., Certified Park and Recreation Professional – CPRP)



Other (If Applicable)



  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required

  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record

  • Ability to conduct site inspections and work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions

  • Must successfully pass a background check; drug screening may be required

  • Preference may be given to qualified Tribal Members in accordance with tribal employment preference policies
