JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for the overall operation of the pharmacy department. The position requires extensive contact with the administrator, medical staff, nursing service, hospital staff, and nonhospital personnel (vendors, auditors).

  • Complies with organizational and regulatory policies for handling confidential patient information.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service through his/her attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization.
  • Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and DNV standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manage and directs the activities of the Department of Pharmacy, including, but not limited to physical appearance of the Pharmacy Department, accuracy of dispensing systems, schedule II drug control, accuracy of billing systems, quality of drug manufacturing and compounding, nursing in-services, clinical programs, and Inventory Management Program.
  • Oversees and assists with unit-dose preparation.
  • Handles and orders narcotics for the hospital.
  • Maintains an adequate drug supply.
  • Coordinates the pharmacy function with the nursing service and the medical staff.
  • Inspects nursing units once a month for outdated medication.
  • Serves on the pharmacy and therapeutic committees.
  • Ensures that the pharmacy department has 24-hour coverage by a pharmacist.
  • Consult with and make recommendations to hospital Administration regarding Pharmacy issues (e.g. new program proposals, ongoing management issues) to ensure optimal patient care and institutional viability.
  • May evaluate drug orders for appropriateness with regard to patient condition, organ function, disease state, and concomitant therapies to promote optimal patient outcomes.
  • May process physicians' orders including, but not limited to, order entry into dispensing computer system, appropriate production selection, compounding, labeling, and repackaging with completion of appropriate records; delegating product preparation activities to pharmacy technicians when appropriate, within legal limits and hospital policies and procedures.
  • Consult with and provide information and guidance to various Medical, Nursing, and other Health Care professionals concerning drugs and their appropriate use to promote safe and effective drug therapy.
  • Ensure that drugs are available to patients at the time they are needed to avoid delays in therapy and promote positive patient outcomes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

 JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or higher.
  • State of Ohio Pharmacist license required.
  • At least five years of experience in a hospital setting with management and supervisory responsibility preferred.
  • Minimum five years of post-graduate staff experience
  • Must be organized and able to develop a planning approach of program implementation.
  • Must exhibit a high degree of professional excellence characterized by sound independent judgment, initiative, and a high standard of ethics.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
