Insero Talent Solutions is recruiting a Director of Prepress for a commercial printing and direct mail company in Rochester, NY.

Position Summary

The Director of Prepress & Mailing Operations is a senior, hands-on role responsible for executing and overseeing all prepress activities and USPS mailing functions within a high-volume digital print environment. This position focuses on technical accuracy, workflow execution, compliance, and problem-solving rather than personnel management. The Director ensures files are production-ready, mail is USPS-compliant, and complex print-and-mail programs move efficiently from intake through delivery.

 

Key Responsibilities

Prepress Execution & Workflow

· Prepare, review, and release print-ready files for digital production, including proofing, imposition, and RIP setup

· Maintain and apply color standards, profiles, and calibration across digital presses

· Troubleshoot complex prepress issues involving fonts, color, transparency, finishing requirements, and file construction

· Ensure accurate and timely handoff of files to print, finishing, and mailing operations

· Support automation and workflow tools to improve efficiency and reduce manual touchpoints

 

Variable Data & Data-Driven Print

· Prepare and execute variable data printing (VDP) files for personalized print and mail campaigns

· Coordinate with data and production teams to ensure file integrity and correct output across versions

· Validate versioning, personalization logic, and production sequencing

 

USPS Mailing & Postal Compliance

· Execute and oversee USPS mailing preparation including presort, postal optimization, and documentation

· Ensure all mail pieces meet USPS design, automation, and Move Update requirements

· Produce and submit postal documentation such as eDocs, postage statements, and drop ship records

· Monitor in-home delivery performance and troubleshoot postal issues

· Maintain current knowledge of USPS regulations and mailing best practices

 

Quality Control & Process Improvement

· Perform quality checks to ensure print accuracy, data integrity, and postal compliance

· Identify root causes of errors, reprints, or mailing issues and implement corrective actions

· Recommend workflow improvements, automation opportunities, and process enhancements

 

Cross-Functional Collaboration

· Collaborate with sales, production, and fulfillment teams to support complex print-and-mail programs

· Provide technical guidance during estimating, job planning, and client onboarding

· Support new equipment, software implementations, and service enhancements

 

Required Qualifications

· 8+ years of hands-on prepress experience in a digital print environment

· Strong expertise in variable data printing and file preparation

· In-depth knowledge of USPS mailing regulations, presort, and postal documentation

· Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, RIP software, and USPS-certified mailing platforms

· Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills
