JOB SUMMARY

Directs and coordinates the activities of the Department of Public Safety: engages in the enforcing of applicable University regulations and government safety requirements; promotes and ensures the Public Safety of students, faculty and staff personnel, and property.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Recommends policies and procedures governing security operations; disseminates information regarding current or revised standards;

Provides direction and supervision of security personnel; monitors work performance to ensure compliance with established federal, state, local, institutional and departmental laws, policies, and guidelines;

Schedules and Monitors work performance of public safety personnel;

Develops and submit budget recommendations and manages approved budgets according to university policy;

Serves as interface with local law enforcement and medical personnel to seek or provide assistance, coordinate investigations, and monitors compliance with established regulations;

Stay abreast of safety and security best practices and trends;

Participates in the investigation of major campus incidents;

Coordinates the registration of vehicles, recommends parking regulations, processes and conducts traffic ticket appeals and the maintenance of related records;

Assist with the compilation, completion, and requirements of the Clery Act as set forth by the US Dept of Education.

Provide a customer service mindset while interacting with Chowan University faculty, staff, students, and its guests.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Perform other related functions and duties as requested by the Associate VP of Campus Life, such as, but not limited to:

Develop and Build Teams – Encourage, coach and build mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members.

Ensure the periodic inspection of fire safety equipment;

Coordinate student and guest transportation to and from public transportation;

Maintain traffic markings on campus streets and in campus parking areas.

Work with Residence Life and other departments to develop and present life skills programming.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High School Diploma Required (Bachelor’s Degree a plus);

Over 4 years- experience in law enforcement as a certified police officer;

Demonstrated ability to coordinate and handle multiple projects simultaneously;

Interpersonal skills (written and oral);

Experience in budgeting a plus;

Ability to make formal presentations preferred.
