The College of Education and Human Ecology Stewardship team collaborates with colleagues within the Office of Advancement and across the College and the University to create opportunities to engage donors and show appreciation for and impact of their giving. The Director of Stewardship is responsible for leading, implementing and managing comprehensive programs that promote meaningful engagement opportunities and create stewardship efforts for the College’s donors. This position focuses on the entire donor cycle and works to create unique experiences that both cultivate and steward our constituents. Reporting to the Senior Director of Engagement and Stewardship, the Director operates with a high degree of independence to make decisions, solve problems, negotiate, and adapt to shifting priorities. The Director must have polished interpersonal skills and be capable of interacting successfully with senior leadership, faculty, development officers, donors, and other key stakeholders. This position is responsible for proactively and independently realizing programmatic activities to include organizing and establishing priorities and managing projects with multiple deadlines and competing requirements.

  • Develops a strategic plan for cultivation-focused donor engagements that provide an exceptional and inspiring experience. Utilizes a stewardship matrix to ensure consistent communications and activities for donors who meet certain giving criteria. Ensures that all engagements have a defined purpose, including concrete messaging around fundraising priorities, and have strategic follow-up tactics that are executed in an effective and timely manner. Evaluates existing stewardship activities and signature events using data and benchmarking and provides recommendations to improve existing activities as needed. Creates a suite of engagement opportunities for senior leadership and development officers which will assist in strengthening relationships with prospects, building pipeline, and generating interest in supporting the College at large. Tailors strategic follow-up tactics based on development officer needs. Continues to evolve the overall stewardship plan by benchmarking both internally and externally with peer institutions. Partners with Central Advancement Donor Experience team to ensure alignment with university standards, while still creating a unique and engaging experience for the College’s donor audience.

  • Monitors current use and endowment funds to ensure expenditures are made in alignment with donor wishes. Interprets gifts agreement language, consulting with University Advancement to ensure regulatory compliance. Works closely with college fiscal officers and development officers and University advancement to monitor fund balances and advise College department/units on spend-down recommendations. Facilitates creation of step-down language and secures donor approval for gift agreements amendments. Initiates and processes new fund creation and fund closures. Establishes and implements processes to meet university stewardship requirements, including regular donor acknowledgements, in a manner appropriate for giving levels.

  • Provides unique and personalized touch points for major and principal gift donors, scholarship donors, and chair/professorship donors. Responsibilities include: developing weekly gift acknowledgements, birthday messages, thank you notes or videos, and other appropriate messages as warranted. In partnership with senior leadership and development officers, develops creative plans for stewarding and engaging with the respective faculty appointees. Proactively seeks out opportunities to highlight/feature donors, prospects, scholarship awardees, and chair/professorship appointees in communication pieces and/or engagement events. Collaborates closely with event planners to oversee event logistics. Performs regular data analysis on registrants/attendees to assist in building out strategy for future events. Creates annual donor reports and scholarship reports, ensuring high quality and timely reporting on giving impact. Responsible for maintaining accurate records in The Advancement System (TAS).

  • Assists with evolving campaign, capital, Advancement and College Advancement priorities. Other duties as assigned. Some night and weekend responsibilities required.

Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree; advanced degree in relevant field.

  • 4-8 years of experience working in development or equivalent field such as marketing, sales, journalism or public relations.

Experience Desired:

• 2 years of experience in stewardship, donor experience, or fundraising

• Excellent oral, written, and graphic communication skills

• 1 year experience planning and implementing strategic engagement opportunities

• Experience working for a large university

• Demonstrated success in managing complex programs and projects

• 1 year of management experience

• Interpersonal and diplomacy skills

• Data analytics and visualization

• Computer literacy including experience with Excel and Tableau
