Job Description - Director, Reinsurance Operations

Job Description:

The Director, Reinsurance Operations provides enterprise leadership for the execution, coordination, and governance of The Mutual Group’s (TMG) member-owned reinsurance programs. TMG’s member institutions are the purchasers of reinsurance and retain ownership of reinsurance strategy and placement decisions. This role ensures those strategies are executed with operational discipline, financial integrity, and strong controls across treaty and facultative reinsurance. This role is accountable for the end-to-end operational administration of the member-owned reinsurance programs, ensuring accurate data, timely execution, compliant contract structures, and disciplined reinsurance accounting and recoveries.


Operating within a growth-oriented, platform-based organization, this position designs and maintains scalable and well-controlled operational processes that support integration, transparency and long-term enterprise value creation. The position partners closely with Finance, Actuarial, Legal, Underwriting, Claims, member appointed brokers, reinsurers, and TMG’s member institutions to support member-directed reinsurance renewals, regulatory compliance, and management reporting. The position supports member-defined reinsurance strategies by providing operational insight, analytics, and execution readiness, ensuring strategies can be implemented, monitored, and governed effectively.

Work Arrangement:

  • Employees who live within 30 miles of the TMG home office are expected to follow a hybrid or in-office schedule. The initial training period may require additional in‑office days.

Accountabilities:

Reinsurance Operations & Execution

  • Provide enterprise ownership of operational administration for all treaty and facultative reinsurance programs.
  • Lead operational execution of annual reinsurance renewals in accordance with member-defined strategy,
    appetite, and placement decisions.
  • Oversee reinsurance data submissions ensuring accuracy, consistency, and timeliness.
  • Manage operational execution of facultative placements and post-bind administration.


Reinsurance Accounting, Reporting & Financial Controls

  • Ensure integrity and timeliness of reinsurance accounting, including ceded premiums, loss recoveries, invoicing
    and cash application.
  • Maintain and continuously enhance internal controls related to reinsurance operations and financial reporting.
  • Ensure timely and complete submission of all ceded losses to reinsurers in accordance with treaty and facultative
    terms, establishing controls and monitoring mechanisms to maximize recoverability and minimize leakage.
  • Monitor reinsurance receivables and collateral; escalate credit or collection risks.
  • Oversee reinsurance collateral management, including estimating collateral requirements, coordinating collateral
    postings with assuming reinsurers, and monitoring compliance with contractual and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure collateral levels appropriately mitigate credit risk and statutory exposure, including support of Schedule F
    provisions.
  • Ensure accurate tracking, reporting, and documentation of collateral balances.
  • Support planning, forecasting, and reinsurer-level performance analysis.
  • Oversee reinsurance statutory and management reporting including Schedule F and Schedule P.


Governance, Compliance & Audit 

  • Maintain complete and auditable reinsurance documentation.
  • Review and evaluate contract terms in partnership with Legal and member institutions leadership teams.
  • Coordinate reinsurer audits, collateral reviews, and diligence activities.
  • Monitor reinsurer credit exposure and collateral sufficiency, escalating risks and recommending mitigation
    strategies as needed.
  • Identify operational and financial risks within reinsurance programs and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Ensure regulatory, statutory, and contractual compliance.


Reporting, Analytics & Stakeholder Management

  • Provide regular, actionable reporting on key reinsurance metrics, including aggregations, collateral positions,
    receivable status, and recovery performance. 
  • Monitor and analyze performance of reinsurance programs, identifying operational risks and improvement
    opportunities.
  • Serve as a key operational partner to internal stakeholders, ensuring transparency, alignment, and timely
    communication.


Leadership, Scale & Continuous Improvement

  • Drive continuous improvement of reinsurance processes, including automation, standardization and
    documentation.
  • Design scalable reinsurance operational frameworks to support growth, acquisitions, and evolving business
    complexity.
  • Support governance, reporting discipline, and investor transparency.
  • Contribute to operational efficiency and enterprise value creation.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Risk Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 5–8+ years of progressive reinsurance experience.
  • Experience in a complex, growth-oriented, multi-stakeholder environment preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to build or enhance processes, controls, and reporting as organizations scale.
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical capabilities.

  • Excellent working knowledge of property and casualty reinsurance structures and accounting.
  • Strong understanding of reinsurance accounting principles and financial reporting.
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead high-performing teams and manage complex financial processes.
  • Strong understanding of insurance operations and internal controls.
  • Proficiency with financial systems, general ledger platforms, and reporting tools.
     

Pay Range:

Anticipated Pay Range:

  • $150,000 - $200,000 annual base salary depending on experience, qualifications, and geographic location
