Director, Volunteer Engagement and Boards of Excellence

Position Summary:

The Alzheimer’s Association® is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research.  To enhance and strengthen this position, as well as increase our reach, partnerships and mission impact, we are committed to activating individuals and communities to fulfill our mission across the country by providing community leadership through local Alzheimer’s Association Boards, raising funds for our mission, providing community programs and making connections.  These volunteers advance the mission and vision of the Alzheimer’s Association in communities nationwide, working in close collaboration with staff and fellow community leaders to implement the organization’s strategic plan priorities.

The Director of Volunteer Engagement & Boards of Excellence is responsible for consulting, guiding and coaching chapter leaders regarding the Association-wide strategic plan implementation and Board of Excellence initiative. The Director will implement a strategy to grow our community presence with leadership volunteers engaged in Board, revenue and program delivery work, develop tools and resources to improve volunteer recruitment, activation and have effective impact in the community make the Alzheimer’s Association the nonprofit volunteer experience of choice. 

The position is responsible for scaling a consistent nationwide Board program that supports the organization’s strategic plan goals and increases community mission engagement. The person in the role will also implement the Volunteer Recruitment & Activation Task Force recommendations to strengthen the volunteer experience for leadership, event and program volunteers and staff, improve volunteer management systems, and deliver customized training on an array of topics.  They will also work with field leaders, volunteers, and other organizational leaders to individually coach for short and long-term issues. 

This position reports to the Vice President, Volunteer & Community Engagement and is home office/remote based.

Responsibilities

• Direct the Community Engagement volunteer experience to ensure that volunteer-led activities are carried out in accordance with the objectives of the Association's strategic plan goals.


• Expand the impact of Boards of Excellence by ensuring that Board initiatives are consistently applied nationwide and continue to grow the mission impact in each community.


• Ensure the Alzheimer’s Association volunteer experience equips leadership volunteers with the tools they need to forge mission partnerships, recruit other volunteers, increase awareness of the Association and drive fundraising efforts through dynamic onboarding, training and support resources


• Collaborating with the Director of Community Training, develop Field Staff Leaders to empower, equip, mobilize and activate volunteers in each community


• Establish & implement an Association-wide volunteer recognition program


• Engage and coach staff leadership on effective volunteer leadership.


• Build Association volunteer communication platform and regularly assess improvements to enhance volunteer mission engagement


• Develop action plans, timelines, metrics and measures to assess implementation progress


• Additional Field Operations responsibilities as assigned

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop and implement volunteer management practices and coach field staff in implementation of best practices


• Ability to create and implement consistent orientation experience


• Create templates and tools that community staff and volunteer leaders can utilize throughout the volunteer lifecycle engagement.


• Coordinate with functional leaders on consistent volunteer engagement strategies to support strategic implementation plans


• Work with field and home office staff leadership to develop volunteer needs and plans


• Plan board member track for annual Community Leaders Summit


• Coordinate nationwide volunteer communication strategies with Office of the CEO


• Ensure opportunities for volunteers & Board members to be a part of Association opportunities and educational offerings


• Implement a standard curriculum that Boards will work to achieve and be recognized for accomplishments


• Assist with other Field Operations initiatives

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years national or regional event management, program delivery or training experience in a non-profit environment, focused on community engagement and volunteerism.


• Proven experience deploying a variety of training methods in different environments (face to face, virtual, etc.) with key stakeholders (staff, volunteers, board members)


• Experience working with boards, engaging them in a mission driven organization’s work.


• Ability to travel up to 40% of the time, as required


• Valid driver’s license, proof of vehicle insurance, and access to a reliable personal vehicle to meet travel requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Sound understanding of nonprofit, business strategies and processes; such as event management, volunteer support, program delivery, email campaigns and communication, and constituent management.


• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage several projects simultaneously, prioritize appropriately, and meet deadlines in a cross-functional environment.


• Team player that has the ability to interface with all levels of staff and volunteers, and provide board guidance in a collaborative, consultative, and positive manner.


• Detail-oriented and strong organizational skills.


• Capable of handling diversified assignments and highly adaptable.


• Excellent written, oral, and communication skills. (Includes presentation delivery, conveying ideas, and instructing effectively.)


• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.


• Ability to build consensus and to work through others in achieving desired results and objectives.


• Ability to think strategically and determine long-term implications of decisions, as well as analyze complex situations and propose solutions that support the Association’s mission and vision.

Position Grade & Compensation: Grade 512 The Alzheimer's Association’s good faith expectation for the salary range for this role is between $133,000 – $165,000

This position is eligible for a bonus based on both individual and organizational performance, up to 6%.
