Job Description

The New York City Law Department is seeking applications for the position of Division Chief in its Affirmative Litigation Division. The Affirmative Litigation Division represents the City as plaintiff in matters that advance public health and safety, address significant policy issues with revenue or programmatic impact, and enforce compliance with the law. Its work spans a broad array of practice areas, including commercial disputes; securities litigation; hazardous product cases; civil racketeering, fraud, and False Claims Act matters; public nuisance and restitution claims; code enforcement and tenant protection; intellectual property litigation; civil rights actions; and administrative, regulatory, constitutional, and other challenges to actions affecting City funding and policy.

The Chief sets the strategic direction for the Division in coordination with the Corporation Counsel and the Law Department’s Executive Team and ensures consistency, quality, and excellence in all legal work product. The Chief supervises, mentors, and evaluates a team of attorneys and legal support staff, fostering a high-performing and collaborative environment.

Qualifications

The Affirmative Litigation Division is dedicated to providing outstanding legal advocacy on behalf of the City. Accordingly, applicants must be admitted to the New York State Bar and possess at least ten years of experience litigating affirmative and complex and high-profile matters in state and federal court. Applicants must demonstrate outstanding oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal abilities, and a proven record of successfully initiating and managing litigation. Experience working in a fast-paced environment balancing multiple ongoing high profile matters simultaneously is also required. Significant experience providing legal counsel, navigating multifaceted issues with diverse stakeholders, and collaborating effectively with colleagues, clients, and co-parties is essential. Applicants must also have a demonstrable history of successful supervision and management of attorneys, legal support professionals and interns.
