Position Summary
The Indiana University School of Medicine ( IUSM ) Department of Emergency Medicine seeks a bold and visionary leader to serve as Chief, Pediatric Emergency Medicine. The vision of the department is to improve the health and well-being of every life entrusted to us. We will accomplish this by caring for others like they are family, teaching the ways our favorite teachers taught us, boldly innovating to improve the care we deliver, and developing leaders who transform emergency medicine. The priorities outlined in our five-year strategic plan are to 1) Set the national standard for emergency care, 2) Reduce healthcare disparities in our emergency departments, 3) Shape emergency medical education, 4) Develop the future leaders of emergency medicine, 5) Ensure our people thrive, and 6) Create and sustain a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and just culture. The department is home to one of the oldest EM residency programs, oldest combined emergency medicine and pediatrics residency program, and four fellowship programs within the division.

We are seeking a strong academic leader to serve as Division Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Candidates must be board certified in pediatric emergency medicine or dually trained and certified in emergency medicine and pediatrics, eligible for licensure in the State of Indiana, and have demonstrated success in leadership, scholarship, and teaching. Experience working in a culturally diverse environment is highly preferred. This individual will be responsible for a group of approximately 32 pediatric emergency medicine faculty, who staff the emergency departments at Riley Hospital for Children and IU Health North and provide educational oversight for our fellowship programs and combined residency training programs. Reporting to the chair, the division chief will lead the academic and clinical missions including our training programs, faculty development, and research efforts. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Set the vision and direction of pediatric emergency medicine for the premier children’s hospital in the state of Indiana.
Lead the faculty of the division.

Contribute to assessment and analysis of

PEM

faculty performance regarding departmental expectations and scholarship for annual reviews and other performance related indications.
Provide educational oversight and faculty development for faculty involved with educational programs for fellows, residents, and students in the pediatric EDs
Recruit new faculty.
Participate in recruitment of suitable faculty for leadership succession.

Lead the education mission of the division.

Maintain

RRC

approved fellowships (pediatric emergency medicine, pediatric point of care ultrasound, pediatric disaster medicine, pediatric simulation education) and combined pediatric emergency residency program.
Provide oversight and mentorship to the program directors.
Develop a robust‐training program for

PEM

advanced practice providers (APPs) to create a cadre of highly trained APPs who can provide definitive care for pediatric patients.

Lead the research mission of the division.

Building a more robust research program, which includes increasing grant funding.
Providing strategic direction for research.
Mentoring faculty, fellows, and residents in their scholarly pursuits.
Collaborating across disciplines in the university and with other sites nationally.

Work collaboratively with the medical director, department leadership, and Riley hospital leadership to lead the clinical mission.

Ensure clinical excellence, including operations, experience, quality, safety, and the expansion of the Riley brand across the state.
Serve as a key player in the expansion of pediatric emergency care.
Develop and implement policies and initiatives to improve the care of patients in the emergency department.
Contribute to the development of a long‐range

Serve as an active and engaged leader and member of the faculty.

Participate in departmental division director meetings, departmental leadership development activities, and department meeting.
Contribute to the education of medical students, residents, and fellows
As needed, serve on department committees.
Support relationships with the School of Public Health, the Department of Pediatrics, Regenstrief Institute and other entities within the campus community for the purposes of strengthening the scholarship, recognition, and overall standing of the division.

Basic Qualifications
MD or DO required; Candidates must be board certified in pediatric emergency medicine or dually trained and certified in emergency medicine and pediatrics, eligible for licensure in the State of Indiana and have a background in leadership, scholarship, and teaching.
