Job Description: Graduate Student Lab Aide - Diagnostic Medical Sonography


Position Title: Graduate Student Lab Aide - Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Program


Department: Diagnostic Medical Sonography                                                                     


Reports To: DMS Instructor / Program Director                                                            


Employment Type: Hourly, As-Needed (No Minimum Hours)                                        


Location: Sacramento Ultrasound Institute



Position Summary:


The Graduate Student Lab Aide will provide essential support to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) faculty during lab-based courses. This position is designed for a recent graduate of a DMS program who possesses a strong understanding of sonographic principles, equipment, and scanning techniques. The Lab Aide will work directly with the DMS instructor to facilitate a productive and effective learning environment for current students by assisting with lab preparations, demonstrations, and student guidance. This is an hourly position with no guaranteed minimum hours, scheduled as needed to support lab activities.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Lab Preparation & Maintenance:

    • Assist in setting up sonography equipment, phantoms, and supplies for lab sessions.

    • Ensure ultrasound machines are clean, properly functioning, and ready for student use.

    • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the scanning lab, including proper storage of supplies and equipment after use.

    • Report any equipment malfunctions or supply needs to the DMS instructor.



  • Instructional Support:

    • Assist the DMS instructor during lab demonstrations, potentially including performing scans on models or phantoms as directed.

    • Provide guidance and support to students as they practice scanning techniques, reinforcing concepts taught by the instructor.

    • Help students troubleshoot basic equipment issues or scanning challenges under the direction of the instructor.

    • Offer constructive feedback to students on their scanning ergonomics and image acquisition, in line with program curriculum.

    • Facilitate smooth transitions between student scanning groups.



  • Student Interaction & Assistance:

    • Answer student questions related to lab procedures, equipment operation, and basic scanning protocols, referring more complex questions to the instructor.

    • Foster a positive and encouraging learning environment for all students.

    • Assist in monitoring student progress and adherence to lab safety protocols.



  • Other Duties:

    • May assist with the inventory of lab supplies.

    • Perform other related duties as assigned by the DMS instructor or Program Director.




Qualifications:



  • A recent graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is required.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in sonographic scanning techniques across various specialties (e.g., Abdomen, OB/GYN, Vascular, Echocardiography – as relevant to the program's curriculum).

  • Strong understanding of ultrasound physics, instrumentation, and patient care principles.

  • Familiarity with current ultrasound equipment and technology.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain concepts clearly and patiently.

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with faculty and students.

  • Reliable, punctual, and able to work a flexible schedule as dictated by lab course needs.

  • Professional demeanor and a positive attitude.


Physical Requirements:



  • Ability to stand for extended periods.

  • Ability to lift and move objects up to 25 pounds (e.g., phantoms, supplies).

  • Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination are necessary for operating ultrasound equipment.
